There isn't really a divide between "nature" and what humans do here, and now. Like, it is our nature to affect change through social attitudes. Humans are a social species. The things that are going on are happening through natural human channels. Humans cut down trees, other humans tell them to stop, other humans tell those humans to stop telling other humans not to cut down trees because it's "their nature" to cut down trees, other humans tell the humans telling the humans that tell other humans not to cut down trees that it's natural for people to tell other people not to cut down trees, etc.

The only truly unnatural human behavior, as Sigmund Freud once said, is setting the thermostat under 73 degrees, because that would obviously be too cold.

Correct, air conditioning is the triumph of the human spirit over nature. If you don't set the thermostat below 73 you're basically an ape.

Me [32f] with my husband [33M] of 12 years. He taught our son (4m) to "flip the bird" and won't correct it, and actually encourages it by laughing. I'm livid and don't know what to do.

quote:

Background: I picked my son up from pre-school yesterday and had a note in his sign in folder that i needed to see the admin. So i went in and apparently Jackson had been flipping all the girls off throughout the day. The school director was pretty upset because it had sort of set off a "flip off" war that the teachers couldn't stop. I had to sign an agreement that if Jackson flipped anyone off or engaged in gender based harassment he would kicked out of the school.

I asked Jackson where he learned it and he said "dad taught me." I asked what he meant he said that dad taught him and it was funny. I approached my husband when we got home and he said basically "it's what boys do, he learns it from me or he learns it from the kid next door who cares?" I was livid because it's i thought in 2017 we're past "it's what boys do" Line of the thinking. I told him no more and he told me to relax that a four year old kid doing the bird is "hilarious." . I explained about the pre-school and getting kicked out and his answer was "they're a bunch of coddling f-gs anyways, good riddance." I was speechless.

I truly don't know how to react to this. It's awful. It's not funny. And I'm the one who will deal with the fall out of finding a new pre school.

How do i handle this?

tl:dr husband taught my son to flip the bird and thinks it's funny. I'm livid beyond words and don't know How to handle myself in this argument.

on the other hand the husband calling them "coddling fags" probably means that when the kid gets to be a teenager dad's going to talk about how it's not rape if the girl doesn't say no

Do any of you have advice for something similar to get closer more? instead of just holding hands

Girlfriend went to Vegas and didn't call or text for 4 days, no contact.

quote:

No Calls from Vegas

My girlfriend of 7+ years went to Vegas for a class reunion and didn't call or text for 4 days except for one picture with no text. I was supposed to go with her but had to cancel at the last minute because of work, she wasn't upset and i asked to text me to let me know she was ok, but she said that the casino didn't have cell service and she couldn't. The she said that she thought i was mad at her and she didn't want to get into an argument. We had just spent a great 8 day vacation together, very loving, very close, and then this... I am really confused, she said nothing happened and the rules don't change for her because it is Vegas. Don't know what to think, but i can't get over it, i look at her completely differently and feel completely disconnected. TLDR: Girl went to vegas no calls or texts for 4 days

My first instinct from the title was "File a police report" but since she's totally fine, I change my advice to :sever: because she totally hosed someone at the reunion.

I once broke up w/ a dude because I was out of town to do something important and he wouldn't stop loving calling me

Woah actually I did that twice :psyduck:

One of them was that my grandmother seemed to be dying and she wanted my help getting her estate in order. I was just so exhausted and it was like, sorry, my life is always going to suck this way and I am never going to stop having to take care of other people, I can't commit this much time to you when grandma got here first.

My boss is a feminist who enforces this at work. At what point does it become illegal discrimination? I'm in Florida. (self.legaladvice)

quote:

My boss (who owns the company) is a strict feminist and enforces this at work. For reference, we are a small company of about 30 employees of which 9 are women.

Let me give you some examples.

She organizes "women's dinners" every few months. All the women go to a restaurant, paid by the company, for networking and discussion. There is usually a guest speaker who talks about women's issues.

There are strict rules on treatment of women at work. One of the men was written up for "mansplaining" simply because she said that he spoke to her in a condescending way. He was not allowed to appeal or question her about it.

Women who have children (which I believe is all of them) are given priority for requesting shifts.

All employees are given a membership fee rebate if they join a feminist organization in our area and actively participate in it.

So is any of this illegal, or is it just a case of a lovely boss that I will have to put up with?

Please don't say to look for another job, because that isn't possible right now for various reasons.

there was someone who sent in a whiny anonymous letter where i work about a women's event and how come there's no men's event huh, and the (male) top dog sent out a message to all employees that was basically "stop whining and get over yourself" with a subtle undercurrent of "i am a loving busy man and i am not happy i had to take time out of my day to respond to this, but i have decided to, and my conclusion is gently caress you dipshit"

as a parent your job is to correct this, not encourage it

if your partner and co-parent is encouraging your child to do these things they are objectively a bad parent and should be shot

I doubt that this particular OP actually has anything of the sort going on, but making it harder for men to take time off for or schedule around kids than it is for women to take time off for or schedule around kids actually serves to reinforce the patriarchal tradition saddling women with more of the labor around kids and household. It is common, and it is pretty anti-feminist.

Oh, I totally agree. The last place I was at had 9 weeks of maternity leave for women, and 3 days of paternity leave for dads. Obviously the woman has the actual physical act of birth to recover from, but the dads definitely deserve more time with their newborn kids.

Hell, we need mandatory vacation in America. We're literally the only first world country without it.
