 at the HUD, looks straight out of Star Citizen.

Also, to be fair, you could do a lot worse in terms of ideas than apeing UI controls from well-done games, since they often get to evolve under actual-use to be actually decent at their jobs and look good at the same time.

(Star Citizen notwithstanding)

It's a little like how there have been military use of PlayStation and Xbox controllers. Because MS and Sony poured more money into interaction design than the military will and the general layout and control use is the result of 20 years of control evolution.

I like the slightly sad and eerie ending where Data says he'll delete the program, pets Spot and blows out the candle.

That episode was kind of like what I'd do if you'd hired me to write one. I always wanted a character-based sci-fi dramatic sitcom.

The best part of Generations was when they had a moment of actual science inbetween all the weirdness that is happening in that movie.

The star is imploding and has thrown off the shockwave that is going to destroy the station and there is the tense race to get Geordi and Data back before the shockwave arrives. They get back to the ship with seconds to spare and Picard orders an immediate jump to warp. But only warp 1, because it's an exploding star so anything FTL is good enough to get them away from it.

More like it's apparently the lead actor's prerogative to get creative control and insist that his character should become an action hero because he's tired of being a weenie reading books and cumming on old pots all the time, no matter how little sense this makes.

It's gonna take them over 11 hours to reach the planet but it's only three light-hours away? This reminds me of something I've wondered about for a while which is what the disadvantages are of higher warp speeds, what warp speed they cruise at by default, etc.

The warp scale was supposed to be pretty clear it's a log scale based on the speed of light at Warp 1. The idea that it approaches infinite at 10 is not a property of logarithms as far as I am aware and makes everything confusing.

Eventually the tech guys gave up and said actual speed varies by subspace domain topology or whatever nonsense so warp speed means nothing.

This, this is what ruined the TNG movies, letting the actors write their own fan fiction. I love Brent and Pat but they belong firmly in front of the camera, not anything to do behind it.

What's the definition of Star Trek? What makes a story well-suited to being branded a Star Trek? Does it have any particular meaning or values, or is it just any story that has phasers and transporters and a starship named Enterprise somewhere in it or its background/history?

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Showrunner Hints Show’s Klingons Modeled on Trump Voters: ‘Racial Purity Is a Big Theme’

DSC showrunner Aaron Harberts posted:

The Klingons are going to help us really look at certain sides of ourselves and our country. Isolationism is a big theme. Racial purity is a big theme. The Klingons are not the enemy, but they do have a different view on things. It raises big questions: Should we let people in? Do we want to change? There’s also the question of just because you reach your hand out to someone, do they have to take it? Sometimes, they don’t want to take it.

North Korea is in our thoughts as we finish the series, he said. What began as a commentary on our own divided nation — in terms of Trump supporters and non-Trump supporters — has blown out to North Korea and how we’re right on the brink. [The U.S. is] actually right at the place where Starfleet finds itself in episode one and we couldn’t have anticipated that happening.

Captains can do what they want.

Picard just LET Riker tell him to stay on the ship during away missions, as Picard wanted some flute practice and knew his number one always wanted some skin flute practice.

Also: missed opportunity for TNG-style zany ideas for how the ships are setup: make the Captain's Yacht his permanent quarters and he can just be like later suckerz daily.

I would say Star Trek is rooted in a setting which is optimistic, in particular with the implication that Earth and the human race will become better than we tend to think of ourselves; we will overcome our various current challenges and will confront new ones from a new perspective. On a creative level it is also rooted in a sort of theater sensibility. Transporters and phasers and so on are just the established details; I myself wouldn't object to a "Star Trek" that reimagined stuff like that if there was a creative purpose to it.
