I have a few SD movies that were itunes codes included in dvds, I guess those will never get upgraded to HD/4K eh.

Amazon just announced a 4K box, so they probably want to remind people that they exist before people dart off and get the ATV5 instead.

If the 4K HDR rentals are the same price as the HD, I'm going to get a lot more use out of my TV. Just couldnt bring myself to pay $10+ to Vudu for a rental.

Way better processor, so I imagine we'll start seeing games that won't work on the Gen 4s. Personally, not an AppleTV gamer or a 4K TV haver, so I don't have a need for this myself.

Mainly I use it for Netflix, YouTube, NHK World, Plex, and NHL/MLB. Upgrades I was hoping for were something like an always-on siri speaker to make it a homekit control center. Guess I'm waiting for longer :B

The remote looks the same. I don't have many movies purchased through iTunes, but it's cool they are getting free upgrades. If the pricing is right I could see myself renting more stuff through them.

Can't wait to see their overpriced sports packages. Loved my last-gen. Wanted to buy 2 more to replace my lovely Fire TV sticks, but knew another one was coming out soon. I'll grab a 32GB on Thursday for sure. The kids can suffer with the Stick some more on their tv.

As a non-AppleTV owner, who doesn't own a 4K TV (no plans to buy one) and who's eye-ing the refurb A-TV, is there any reason to get the new Apple TV? I don't think they're going to turn it into a new gaming platform with NOT-Journey, so I'm okay with a 32GB Previous-Gen ATV right? EDIT: Or, I own a PS4, is this a waste of money?

In fact of the devices I use (Shield TV, PS4 and Apple TV) for Playstation Vue, the Apple TV delivers as good if not superior video quality, and a far more responsive app in terms of lag with startup and channel changing. If only the UI were as good as the Shield TVs...

Remember when Apple announced that Apple Music would be coming to the Apple TV (before the 4th gen was announced) and then when it did it was only on the 4th gen. You could airplay to the 3rd, but c'mon.

The espn app has added a multicast feature that I’m not sure if it’s on other platforms yet. But the implementation is really good if you like following multiple sporting events at once.

PS Vue has multichannel also, but only on PS4. For some reason the feature hasn't trickled over to the Shield TV (AndroidTV) or AppleTV version of the client even though both could easily handle it. Out of all the stuff I have, the PS4 is the least satisfying platform when it comes to watching TV or streams.

The only problem is, the last two Saturdays it has been absolute poo poo as far as streaming quality. I thought it was just me but I checked twitter both weeks and people were experiencing the same poo poo. Buffering, pixelated, stuttering......awful. Hell, it was doing that during College Gameday! It's not even like it was a big primetime game that everyone was watching. Hopefully they get their poo poo together since the new app is very cool and I want to get as much college football shooting into my eyeballs at the same time as I can. (I've been known to bring the bedroom TV down, set up my iPad, and my wife's computer all next to the big TV so I can watch 4 games at once. It's an illness)

So I missed the Apple TV part of the announcement. 4K and video games? Anything else? I use two of the 4th gen and they work fine, all I need them to do is Netflix, HBO, soon Amazon video, and airplay. No 4K TVs. So I can't think of any reason to upgrade either of them.

Good on espn for at least trying. ATV followed iOS in the sense that Apple built some awesome capabilities all accessible via APIs and get some awesome demos shown at a keynote (in this case MLB), and then nobody utilizes them for years and just does the bare minimum. There's still so many apps on the iPhone that haven't been flagged to scale to the sizes of phones for years. You can see the top bar grow in size when you load them, and you know it's 5 minutes work at most to sort it out.

TV tech moves slower than phone tech. This was the update that should have been out 2 years ago. Now Apple can go back to ignoring it for another 3 years and there's nothing new on the horizon right now to force them to update any faster.

They might update it with HLG or HDR10+ eventually once the standards catch on more, but, like someone else said, Apple's pace is rarely about being first to market. Variable refresh rate would be lovely in a few years, too, but that'll probably have to wait for at least HDMI 2.1. It's nice that they got Dolby Vision, even though it should be expected from anyone moderately competent.
