Yeah, it seems pretty cool as a collector's item for fans of the series. It's just an omnibus that saves paper.

I think it's pretty cool, and is probably a pretty decent idea for a long-running series like that, but jesus christ $260 is the entry-level for getting a book in return, with a planned retail price of almost $350.

Or one big higher-res screen that could show both pages at once at proper size, cuz that'd be bulky as hell to store. But keep in mind also that this is going to the kind of person who'd otherwise be dropping like $500 to buy the book volumes new, I guess. Of course I'd never have interest in this because I don't particular like the one comic series they have to offer. But it looks like it's otherwise well made.

The dual screen ereader does actually serve the media better. I did a quick search looking for dual screen ereaders and only found a small niche product from a few years ago. If anything, someone could kickstart a full featured emanga-reader with two screens and tons of options/tiers of horrible anime covers. I guess you could also take a larger tablet and put it in landscape, but then where would we get more content for the thread? I could see some kid basically duct-taping two chinese ereaders together and getting funded.

Kickstarter really doesn't like when you're just putting together funding to an order of an existing product from an unrelated company (although they have allowed things like, trying to restart an old production line or whatever), with rules specifically against it most of the time. I'm not sure whether Indiegogo specifically has rules against it too, but I suspect they do.

If Indiegogo somehow says no, you presumably go to Crowdzu, which I've never heard of before today. Alternatively, you go to whatever spanish crowdfunding site allowed that 25th anniversary reprint of Heroquest after both Kickstarter and IGG shut it down (surprise, surprise, it's still vaporware years later).

Good thing I missed that, I totally would have backed it. What's the story there? Does GamesWorkshop still retain the rights? EDIT: I looked into it because I was curious and the story is so much stupider. Kickstarter says he owns the rights to the name "HeroQuest" but only in Spain, also he's not really remaking HeroQuest but you can just ignore that point and throw money at them. Its not Milton Bradley or Games Workshop that takes them down but some 3rd party that owns the rights to the name "Hero Quest" in the US (where the Kickstarter was run from because KS Spain doesn't exist) but in an entirely different context. The whole thing was/is incredibly dumb. On all sides. Snuffman has a new favorite as of 00:10 on Sep 20, 2017 |

Here's a bit of an odd one I'm going to tear apart: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pimax8kvr/pimax-the-worlds-first-8k-vr-headset?ref=recommended Alright, so the idea itself isn't bad, but there is a pretty big problem they kind of gloss over with this kickstarter: What kind of machine is required to push out 2x 4k displays worth of graphics at 90 hz? They quote a GTX 980/1070 or an Fiji XT card, but that's not going to cut it...Unless the games aren't running natively at that res, which kind of makes them liars. The horsepower required to push out that many pixels at that refresh rate is going to cost somewhere in the realm of $3,000 for just the computer. I'm imaging a couple Titan XPs in SLI might be able to do the job. Building out a display array that can deliver these kind of resolutions isn't the problem. Finding a computer to actually run this stuff is going to be the challenge. Also, 4k x 2 isn't 8k. That's not how resolutions work.

Canine Blues Arooo posted:Here's a bit of an odd one I'm going to tear apart: It is how "k" works cuz that dumb poo poo standard is just the rough horizontal resolution, which can be any of a number of vertical resolutions. People should stick to the old ways of listing the actual resolution of things in both directions but stuff like 4k lets you sell a 3840x2160 display and a 4096x2560 display, or games natively rendering at one or the other, like they're the same, so it's obvious why marketers love it. You can sell a panel or a render as if it's got nearly 25% more pixels than it really has, and some of those "ultrawide" monitors really abuse it. They'll give you like 3840 across but 1600 something high and brag how it's 21:9 ultra wide screen.

Canine Blues Arooo posted:Here's a bit of an odd one I'm going to tear apart: To be super fair, it seems like the resolution they're pushing is primarily to get around the screen door effect you have in the headsets. Rendering at the same resolution as say the Vive, and then upscaling it would result in a slightly better experience, provided the effect is lessened there. You'd have the option of going to their ""8k"" resolution in applications that need less render power though, atleast. But as you mentioned, unless games can actually account for this and upscale, then no loving way in hell are you getting a reasonable performance from a 980/1070 in games. (Though this might easily be fixed by having access to SteamVR's down/supersampling feature, where you could run the headset at o.1-5.0 resolution, and upscale automatically. ) " Brainwarp: render and display image in a sequence. i.e. For each time, only one eye can see a 4K image. Pimax 8K renders a single 4K image at 150/180 times per second, but users perceive a complete 8K at 150/180 Hz with high frame rate. Brainwarp boosts refresh rate, reduces latency and decreases GPU pressure for Pimax 8K. " They keep increasing numbers to misrepresent themselves though. 2 displays running a 90Hz doesn't really mean they can claim that they're running 180Hz, yet they do. It also seems like their marketing-speak is trying to claim that their amazing 'Brainwarp' is totally new and amazing, but it just seems like it's doing alternate-frame rendering. Essentially running each display at 45hz, while claiming that this is 180Hz. Either that, or they're somehow claiming that they're rendering at 180Hz, with every other frame being sent to each individual eye, leading to 2x90. But that's just terrible. It would mean that you'd have half as much time for the cpu to update poo poo like physics ahead of the frame getting rendered. It's especially bad considering that a great optimization/rendering optimization you can do in VR is having instanced stereo rendering. Which wouldn't really be possible when you're only rendering a mono image twice as fast. If they can actually build it, and essentially have a SteamVR/Vive/Lighthouse compatible headset with a higher resolution and FOV, then nice, I might be interested once it's on market. But their marketing is kind of misleading. It is promising to see stuff set up to be compatible with SteamVR's trackers and everything, though.
