I work with a high school robotics team in my spare time, and one year the rules of the game (national competition) specified a linoleum playing surface, and everyone had to use the same hard plastic wheels, simulating the reduced traction that you'd get in a low-g situation (the moon).

You were still allowed to use the same electric motors as always. Our robot drew 11 kilowatts at full power and weighed 120 pounds.

That year was...entertaining.

You probably couldn’t have gotten away with this, but I’m imagining way to skirt the rules like “fan propelled” or “make a tracked vehicle”.

Had to use the same wheels as everyone else -- no tracks.

I don't recall the ruleset exactly, but I don't think it said that the wheels had to be driven. Theoretically you could have made a fan-propelled robot, as long as you drove it with one of the approved motors. I think a suction fan would also have been technically acceptable, though I shudder to imagine a bunch of high schoolers (1) trying to make an airtight fan duct and (2) working on a robot with a huge spinning fan in its center.

The organization (FRC) is very much like the FIA or FIM in that they ban everything interesting the following year. A couple of years ago it was advantageous to have your robot occupy one specific spot on the field for the whole match, so a team built a bot with telescoping claws that pierced the carpeted playing surface and hunkered down, preventing any other robots from knocking it out of position. Now you get a penalty for intentionally damaging the field.

Another year -- there's always been a ban on robots that split up into different parts and/or intentionally leave pieces on the field. There's also a ban on how far outside your robot's frame perimeter it is allowed to extend things like arms or poles. One year they loosened that latter requirement, so there was no limit on how big your robot could be as long as it still remained connected to the main body. One team built a robot with three sections that could be deposited at different parts on the field, each one remaining connected to the main body with a retractable steel cable, so it could turn itself into an assembly line that played several parts of the game (moving foam blocks around the field) all by itself. The team worked out an extremely complicated sequence of movements that they followed every match to avoid running over their own cables.

Fun stuff.

Anyway, proper drift cars are built as proper as any race car as Cat Interceptor (suprisingly?) is agreeing with.

If you look at the proper FD cars, none of them are slammed with crazy camber like the scene car. Alignment and they can grip as well as anything.

Since we're talking about awesome drift cars, i'm just gonna do a dump of YouTube videos of some awesome drifty business:

Say what you will, but when Forsberg can initiate a drift at 150mph and still maintain control, that's a pretty good sign that car is well built.

Its not the grip that marks drift cars are superb race cars TBH, its what Colin Chapman said - Handling is what happens when the grip runs out. Drift cars REALLY handle well, you cant back it in with a lovely handling car. Plus yeah they do also grip drat well too.

Most drift cars are in fact extremely good track cars with ridiculously good suspension engineering. To be able to put a car on the dot with the rears blazing takes a very well sorted chassis that also crosses over to just plain going fast around a corner.

This - if you start delving into it, there's a lot of really sophisticated stuff going on everywhere in those cars. The only real suspension compromise not suited for circuit stuff is all of the optimizations to get huge amounts of steering angle. But the powertrains are honestly pretty cool too... yeah, there's the big turbo V8s, but also all of the tricks the smaller "more traditional" engines are pulling to have a responsive but high power engine. Nitrous for spool assistance is a funny and good idea, and there's a few cars (in FD anyway) that are using WRC style air bypass antilag - not just throttle kickers, but routing air around the engine into the turbo manifold. Combine that with all of the other optimizations... keeping all the delicate stuff protected, shoehorning quickchange differentials modified for IRS in, so on and so forth, the tech is pretty darn cool.

I'll set the building on fire
I think the 968 has a decent shot of winning it this year. On the other hand it's coming together at the last minute with no testing of the new engine or aero. The new engine, btw, is a billet 4.0 inline 4. 116mm bores!

It would be cool to see Under win finally but that car seems to have hit a wall while everyone else is going to go faster. I'm sort of expecting it to have Andrew's new front end like Andy Forrest's Impreza. Curious to see how that car holds up this weekend; i suspect there will be issues with the front wheel chain drive system.

Fwd is going to be good to. Will Au-Yeung from Canada has a fast, well put together car and he crushed Rado's record at superlap last year.

That engine has also been made not far from where I live. Apparently they’ve just got it running. Cutting it pretty close with the event.

The idea of a 1:1 power ratio makes no sense to me. What are the units? 1hp:lb? (And if so, what kind of hp—PS or BHP) 1kW:kg? 1hp:kg? 1kW:lb? It's just as meaningless and arbitrary as every other kind of bench racing.
