Putting aside space elves for a bit, I know there's quite a few Tyranid players lurking in this thread. What are you all hoping to see from the new codex?

Mainly I'd like to see Hive Tyrants less overshadowed by Broodlords. Walkrants (and the Swarmlord) escorted by Tyrant Guard should be scarier. They're cool models but it's such a huge chunk of points to field right and the impact these units have doesn't justify that now. Why sink 350-450pts into a T6 bullet magnet when that also buys you multiple Broodlords/Primes that fulfill a similar role but can't be shot at? Flyrants shouldn't need gimmicky Hard to Hit or Character targeting rules that many Nid players keep pushing for. Just let them use nearby Gargoyles for protection like less effective Tyrant Guard.

More than anything, I want to see fluffy & thematic armywide special rules that make the army feel less 'flat' than the current Index rules:
  • Monsters that can fight on through horrific injuries in some situations (ignoring damage table effects)
  • Tactical regeneration via stratagems / psychic powers (rather than it being a per-monster upgrade and rarely affecting anything)
  • Respawning gaunts like the old Without Number rule
  • Sacrificing gaunts to protect synapse creatures
Well, while we’re wishlisting…

  • Better ways to deal with fliers and vehicles at range
This feels like our biggest weakness to me right now. Exocrines and Hive Guard feel like our best shooty options, but only deal 2 or D3 wounds. They’re also very expensive. I realize we’re not a shooty army – getting a way to stall enemy tanks would be fine. The PSI Power that gives -1 to hit is a good example, but doesn’t help when you’re not in range, or don’t get turn 1.
  • Making our big beasts more survivable
On paper, the Exocrine is awesome – when I got back into the game I bought two of them immediately. Ingame, they have to be deployed in LOS to the enemy army, as they lose about 75% of their effectiveness when they have to move before shooting. And T8 3+ 12 wounds sounds good, but a couple lances or lascannons melt them off the table. Without invul saves, FNP or the ability to strategically use LOS-blocking terrain, they are huge targets.
  • Making turn 1 more survivable
With large units, fitting all models into area terrain is usually impossible – so is deploying everything behind terrain. Not getting turn 1 also means Catalyst isn’t up. A stratagem that lets us get something like night fight rules (sporeclouds or something) would be amazing.

Also agree on Carnifexes needing 3+ to hit.

Been doing one off for a hobby challenge so here is hombre dos of my ten dudemans squad:

He's partially from the old 3rd edition BA honoUr guard squad i've had since 2001. Finally painted the guy up.

For reference, here is his squad buddies and the captain they are supposed to protect. Mind you, they were painted years ago so there slightly more rough than current marines. Missing is the jump techmarine who I am waiting for special bits to make better.

I want to branch out and I'm going to stick with it.
Yeah. My Tyranid wish list is about a mile long.

Genestealers either get cheaper, or have their invuln be 4+.
Termagants are fine, but devourers should be fewer points. If a storm bolter is 2 points, a devourer should not be 4. 3 would be nice, 2 would be great.
Hormagaunts need an extra attack. Sure they can surround things nicely, but they can't kill anything even remotely tough.
Boneswords need to do extra damage. They've always had an ability that triggers instant death. Maybe they deal an extra mortal wound on a to wound roll of 6, or maybe their damage ups to d3. SOMETHING. Monstrous Boneswords maybe double damage on a 6. Would actually make them worth taking.
Lash whips should allow the user to fight first, regardless of charging status.
Crushing Claws should do d6 damage. Monstrous Crushing Claws should do 6 damage.
Trygons should be S8. Also need more durability.
Lictors need to double their attacks profile
Venomthropes should be characters.
Hive Guard Impaler Cannons should be flat 3 damage.
Exocrines are fine, they just need an HQ to grant them rerolls.
Tervigons are fine, just need to be cheaper.
Cut Hive Tyrants down to 9 wounds. Tyrant Guard should be cheaper.
Swarmlord should also be 9 wounds, but should regenerate 1d3 wounds every turn. Or maybe resurrects after dying like Guillimon and Celestine instead. Should grant rerolls to hit for everything within 6". Synapse range should be 18" Bonesabers should do a flat 6 damage.
Old One Eye should have 9 wounds. Should get stronger as he's wounded, not weaker.
Harpies and Crones should get Hard to Hit. Maybe a bit more offensive power. More attacks maybe.
Tyrannocytes just need a bit of a price drop.
Rippers should get more attacks.
Spore Mines need a significant price decrease. They're great when dropped by biovores and harpies, but purchased, they're insanely overpriced.
Haruspex needs a price decrease.
Toxicrines need FAR less punishing degredation of stats, more durability, more attacks... basically it's poo poo at everything.
Raveners need to be cheaper, or far better at attacking than shrikes/warriors to make up for not being synapse. Red Terror needs to be cheaper.
Monstrous Deathspitters and Devourers need to double their number of shots. Or Deathspitters go to 2 damage and Devourers double shots.
Catalyst should go back to being on caster and 1 friendly unit.
Already spoken about Carnifexes.

Zoanthropes and Biovores are fine.

The bases for my army are Secret Weapon's ruined temple bases. They're painted to emulate Central Texas pink granite as a neat call-back to my home state. It's pretty easy and is just a bunch of stippling followed by layers of drybrushing. I think I went a little overboard with the final stone layer and not enough pink is showing through compared to my previous models. No big deal though. This time around I also experimented a bit more with texture paints and scattered rocks. I like the final results a lot and will be doing that on all future models. I'm thinking about adding an occasional tuft or two after I varnish. Tiny plants growing between cracks in the rock, that sort of thing.

The inlays are green marble because I hate that I don't get to paint green anymore and wanted to work it in to the army somehow. The green itself is done with washes and glazes, but the lines are all done by hand.

Tyranids need a rhino (70 point T7 12" move no transport, just tie poo poo up cheap) and guns that are at least equal to lascannons in some capacity (basically give a tyrannofex +1 BS at all levels). Also, monster degrading HURTS Tyranids more than any other race, but that just might be my take on it.

It would be neat if venom cannons caused degrading when something is hit by them. They still won't kill things, but it'll go back to the days that Tyranids were good at locking down vehicles until they could get up close.

For the Hive Fleet bonuses and stratagems, I would actually like to see them usable only on creatures under synapse. The rules should be something like "All units under synapse get XZY, while all units with the synapse rule get ABC".

EDIT: And can we please get back bonuses for two kinds of melee weapons? I really don't feel like proxying my scything/rending or scything/bonersword warriors...

I think that squad was in progress for like 9-10 months at least. :shepicide: I started them shortly after my first 20-man, chaplain, and contemptor. I then got distracted by tons of side projects like characters for Silver Tower, my Skullapalooza terminator chaplain, a Catachan squad for Shadow Wars, etc. The biggest roadblock was my approach to the squad though. I did them in batches of 5, 10, and 5. That batch of 10 just dragged on and on and on and killed my will to paint them. I'm not doing that again, but that's what I say every time I've done it. I also paint my MkIVs without their guns or backpacks so I can get to the goddamned chest cables properly. So I did 20 guns, backpacks, swords, and bases all at the end before being able to assemble everything. Don't be me, y'all.

On the bright side, this is my second and final full tactical squad. I won't be doing another and this is the last MkIV I'll have to paint for a while too. I separate my squads by armor marks so my support/heavy support squads are all in MkIII and my vets are in MkII. I'm taking a hiatus from infantry though and will be focusing on some vehicles for the near foreseeable future as I am building an Ironwing army. It's been a long time since I've done one so I'm fairly excited.

  • Respawning gaunts like the old Without Number rule
  • Sacrificing gaunts to protect synapse creatures

This is already repeating some comments by other posters but my wishlist in order of personal importance:

1a) Better survivability for big bugs. Getting tired of fielding T8 W14 models like the Tyrannofex, that then immediately either die on the first turn, or survive with drastically reduced stats. Alternatively I'd love to see Tyranid monsters ignore the wound tables entirely, like the Carnifex already does. Could go well with the whole Hive Mind flavor as well, even the big critters are ultimately just flesh puppets.
1b) While at it, take a long hard look at the newer monstrous creatures and make them worth spending money and time on. The Haruspex, Toxicrene and Maleceptor look incredibly cool, but there's so little reason to run them while they're so weak, slow and easy to kill.

2a) Slightly de-emphasize the reliance on Genestealers, preferably by buffing our other troops somehow. Stealers are fine and cool, but I'm not a huge fan of them as our primary swarm troop. I've always seen the unit as more of a specialist/elite unit. Leave the horde tactics to gants and hormies.
2b) Give us a HQ option that interacts with Hormagaunts! The stealers have their Broodlord, termagants have Tervigon, warriors have Prime. But our cheap melee horde unit has no such thing. At the very least give us some good stratagems or whatever to make these guys more appealing. I just love the look of the model.

3a) Buff the Hive Tyrant a little. It's super nice that we're no longer stuck with Flyrant spam as the only valid HQ option, but right now there's very little reason to run our signature HQ. The guys don't need to be much better, just enough to make me actually consider them over Broodlords or Malanthropes. Double points if they somehow manage to make Walkrants worth running.
3b) Better biocannons. Mainly the venerable Venom Cannon and Barbed Strangler lines. Big reason why walkrants have been terrible, and why Twinlinked Devourers were the standard for such a long while. 'nids don't need to be the best at shooting, but at the very least give us something viable on Tyrants and Carnifex if you want to build them for range. The 3rd edition Hive Tyrant with a Venom Cannon is such an iconic visual for me, and it's a shame there's no reason to run those.

It's not a bad book in terms of being weak or anything, you just feel like there could have been more to it. They really needed to wait and release more stuff along with what's there already.
