proponents of basic income are looking at the problem in completely the wrong way. why is it that we allow such an absurd economic system that is not able to provide employment for people who want employment? why do we allow an economic system to allow so much to labor and still live in squalor despite generating enormous economic value? why say we need to redistribute and not analyze why we allow a system producing such great inequalities in the first place? the proposal of a basic income is a band-aid and does not fundamentally address the root causes of the problems it purports to solve. under a capitalist system, such a policy will be undermined at every turn. the taxes to pay for beneficiaries will by design be shared by both laborers and capitalists to sow perpetual divisiveness. see what happened to welfare in the united states. see what has happened to the distribution of taxation between laborers and capitalists in the united states and what is being proposed at this very moment in congress. a simple calculation of the United State's GDP per capita will show that those relying on just basic income like the graph proposes will practically live in squalor and poverty. our present economic system is (in general) structured in such a way that a job is only provided if a capitalist believes that they will be able to profit off of providing that job. the entire history of capitalism in the united states has shown that this has always resulted structurally in large numbers of unemployed. this system exacerbates the misery of economic downturns by creating a feedback loop of firing people and not hiring. this is insanity. to spend time and energy on a band-aid like basic income on this problem and not a true solution is insanity. what are reasonable solutions to unemployment? they've already been done and proven in this country. cut the work week. public employment to fill what the private enterprises fundamentally and practically cannot fill. there is absolutely no shortage of productive work that can benefit society. we toil under a fundamentally broken economic system that denies employment when there is literally no shortage of work. the ultimate goal should be moving away from tyrannical employer-employee relationships to worker-owned enterprises. richard wolff has a good socialist critique of the basic income under a capitalist system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRXdUiDnIqk

also imprisoning 2.2 million people and only considering the taxes required to imprison them would only result in an economic criticism that it costs taxpayers "billions". the long-term lost opportunity cost to society of productively employing these people (beyond the few in literal slave labour) is surely in the trillions.

keep in mind also the masses of laborers dedicated to simply imprisoning people as well who are not allocated to otherwise productively pursue other occupations. this includes the masses of lawyers, suppliers, judges, clerks, law enforcement, security personnel, construction workers, maintenance workers, etc.

in the couple of months between the escalator and when trump won the primary (he won the primary probably by november or december of 2015 when he succeeded in making it all about him) rubio and jeb! and kasich were all campaigning extremely obama and speaking hopeful and optimistic about how america's best days were ahead of us and if any of them were nominated hillary would have run right into the same wall of "people dont want to be told their hopes and dreams of having a good life are unrealistic" that she did against both obama and trump

Actually all things considered, you're mostly hurting various insurance companies on both ends so it's really quite a win-win.
