Finally found out what my job really entails. Programming of building automation systems including industrial processes with equipment running into the millions of dollars including critical products chains that lives relies on.

Bad code or setting could result in lots of lost product, equipment, dead people and explosions. Also other non-obvious failure modes exist. OSHA day in, day out.

Can I recommend TLA+? It allows you to describe a program or system of programs and then test any compiled code against that description, and mathematically prove that the program is compliant or not. Extensively used for military and aviation purposes.

This is definitely something to consider but likely overkill currently since the application has it's own simulation and debug suite. The added complexity would be a distraction as I am initially expected to work on lights and HVAC systems. But looks most useful in larger, more explosion critical systems down the road. But thank you for bringing it up.

The basic programming is old school ladder logic in digital form with plain language scripting for closer encounters. I haven't touched the program software at this time as I haven't reached that stage of induction as I need to learn about the physical systems first and the documentation process before I even start looking at code.

Once you get past "Explosions" it isn't bad and I have accidentally jumped ahead of the learning process by drawing out by hand how the application works. I got told not to try to learn a month worth of material in a week which is very good advice.

So I am going to take it easy, enjoy the site visits and be the default head of IT at the attached partner office. Its IT amateur hour there since its not a big office and everything is ad hoc with no security beyond a wifi password and windows login. No backups etc so I have written up a proposal to move them past the year of our lord 2010.

They also want 3D CAD stuff so system building time unless they want to watch paint dry.

But it's a place to park me in while they sort their business poo poo out which is not my problem.

Maybe. On one hand snakes are curious as hell. My BP gets in a lot of trouble because of this. On the other hand, snakes love being in tight/warm spaces and left alone. Hence the hilariously telegraphed strikes against the feeder.

That gif gets posted a lot in snake subreddits and I don't think anyone has identified why they're being stored that way.

Pretty sure this article, if not proven irrevocably false, has had so much shade thrown on it that its veracity is very, very much in doubt. The same has apparently been said about basically all other eastern and south-eastern Asian cultures so I think its a pretty good bet by this point this is just another "You wouldn't believe what those wacky [Asian culture] do now!" click-bait.

They're stored like that for venom collection. Those bins actually fit quite well for the tradeoff between access and safety.

You could hop in the China thread and read all about how those kinds of trucks are efficient roadkill makers and how that article exaggerates very little, if anything at all.

IIRC, it's a cultural notion of "only the guilty feel remorse" and the antithesis of anything "good samaritan": if you help someone who was mugged, it's probably because you mugged them and felt guilty about it afterward.

There's a pretty big difference between certain kinds of trucks being especially deadly if they hit a person and a few hundred million drivers all being ready, willing, and able to grind someone into the pavement.

Snakes totally have readable body language. And I'm not even a snake dude.

Like most of the time it's one of four postures:

- Chilling
- did they see me?
- I've been noticed!
- FOOD TIME/BITE TIME

Most people don't observe snakes in the first state and only see them in state two or three, since typically they see us first, and then assume snakes are cagey fuckers.

Really, they're pretty chill, but just want to be left alone.

Everyone ignores traffic lights/laws but people on bikes do it the most. They have no physical protection. Many truck drivers are paid by distance traveled, so they are constantly driving at maximum speed and never stop for traffic or red lights or anything else. People are loving idiots, China has gently caress you got mine cranked to 11, everyone is I GO FIRST in all situations, lots of people don't even know how driving works, no one cares about or notices anything other than themselves, no one pays attention to rules, no concept of public behavior or decency...

E: Just look at this poo poo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUHYcnjUKhs

E2: Also there's all kinds of bad driving here that's just loving nuts. Like I see at least a few people driving on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic every single day that I'm outside. Every. Single. Day. The kind of stuff I'd see maybe like once or twice in my entire driving lifetime in the US is a daily occurrence on Chinese roads.

I think you underestimate the forethought of Chinese drivers. It's not that they plan to go all Twisted Metal the moment they get behind a wheel, but that they see no moral conflict in re-running over a person repeatedly and using plausible deniability to avoid both lifetime injury payments and criminal intent jail time in exchange for a relative slap on the wrist and a one-time fine. A lot of it is instilled culture and common knowledge through community experience, like manners, rude gestures, the open/closed mouth when eating, and so on.

EDIT: Those trucks? They don't have to throw it into reverse, you catch one, you're done, basically.

So I just came from doing a walk-through of an apartment building. At the top of the stairwell I noticed there was no roof access hatch so i asked the super if she knew if there was a roof hatch anywhere or if you just had to get up there externally. She said she remembered someone telling her about how the roof access was in the basement. What??

So we went into the basement, opened a random storage locker. Inside this storage locker were some typical building upkeep supplies including a step ladder. This step ladder wasn't being stored, it was secretly part of the roof access. Looking up I saw a 3 story pipe chase lined with some 1x3's someone had nailed between the studs to form a ladder. So to get to the roof of this building you needed to climb up an old step ladder using the correct safe system of putting all your weight on the top "step", sort of jump and pull your self up into a small hole in the ceiling, then climb 3 stories up in pitch black on a poorly made unfinished lumber ladder, then, while still on this ladder in the dark, pop open a hatch and slither out.
A part of me really wants a house designed with all kinds of secret passages/rooms like this. Another part of me knows I'll never get it because lol @ upward mobility.
