8-Bit Scholar posted:I had thought that was the implication and for some reason I'd thought that the Occurians are somehow destroyed by what you do. I haven't yet beaten the Pharos yet in my playthrough of the Zodiac Age, so I'm remembering from years and years ago, but for whatever reason I finished FF12 thinking they were dead. Except that after you destroy the Sun Cryst, Venat is still there and possesses Vayne to ostensibly fight against you for reasons I'm having trouble understanding. It's also pretty important that Vayne says "Sorry Venat, I failed you and you need to find someone else to carry out your plans" then Venat replies with "Well actually you've been more successful than you can imagine", then possesses Vayne and attacks your party. Was Venat's plan from the beginning to "help" humans break free from Occurrian control only to try to create his own World of Ruin to rule over using Vayne's body as a vessel?

Elephant Ambush posted:Except that after you destroy the Sun Cryst, Venat is still there and possesses Vayne to ostensibly fight against you for reasons I'm having trouble understanding. It's kind of left open to interpretation. On it's face, it may seem like Venat was basically acting as Prometheus, giving humanity the gift of fire as it were (man-made magic nukes so that humanity wasn't always at the whims of the Occuria's chosen). This is sort of backed by the constant "reins of history back in the hands of man" mantra, as well as the Occuria acting like overbearing dicks when you meet them. Him possessing Vayne at the end could be seen as a good bro sticking with his friend until the end, even going down fighting with him. But I think Venat's goals were less altruistic. The deifacted nethicite the Occuria gave to man was never shown to have the power to give the Occuria direct control over anyone; instead, they picked someone's whose goals were generally aligned with their own, and then gave them the power of nukes to have that person steer society in a direction they liked. And it actually turned out pretty well! King Raithwall was their last pawn, and he was fondly remembered by all as a benevolent unifying force that advanced Ivalice as a whole. Meanwhile, the manufacted nethicite that Venat taught Cid how to make was repeatedly shown to drive people violence-crazy, and with both Judge Bergan and that Viera woman, you see the spectre of Venat leaving their body (or so it appears) after they were defeated or foiled. So I think Venat's plan was to flip the bird at the other Occuria, destroy their loose means of manipulating humanity, and instead creating nethicite that allowed him to directly possess and control people. Also, Vayne did not seem like he was expecting or enjoying getting possessed and turned into cyber bahamut at the end there, so I think Venat was just like "gently caress it, I'll kill these guys myself" rather than having to start his plans all over again and having to find someone else with the means to make his nethicite.

Yeah Venat's plan at the end was a bit weird since instead of going with the 'destroy Sun Cryst plan' that Ashe eventually decides on, Dr. Cid decides to... get all the original shards and use it to power the Bahamut for... some reason I dunno. To destroy the Resistance maybe, but why?

Him taking over Vayne may have been a last-ditch effort to stop you, since Venat would have no place on heaven or earth if Vayne bit it.

It's mentioned in FFT that all the moogles died out over time (in an area description), and we know for a fact there was a fantasy disaster that wiped out a lot of old civilization, but that's about it within FFT itself proper as a game

It would not be out of place or Ivalice Alliance's writing if they decided to just windmill slam FF14 in there and retcon everything again for the ninth time. Ivalice is a great setting that seemingly purposefully is not meant to make sense.
