This can be incredibly hard on families. Holy hell. I know this is a symptom of a hosed up situation USA has it's citiziens in, but still. I can't believe someone is recommending joining the army to reset your life. Such a sad state of fairs.

Life included moving every 3 years to military bases in Corpus Christi TX, Pensacola FL, Norfolk VA, and Annapolis MD (this place is definitely a place of privilege). It's important to understand that privilege doesn't mean "I was born to a wealthy and prestigious family". You can have worked hard your whole, come from a lower class background, have had disadvantages, while still benefiting from privilege. It's not a "am privileged" yes/no check box. this sort of illustrates this, but then you get into racial and gender advantages. You might have had to have gotten a second job, but you got that job because your application didn't go into the "one of those people" bin next to the recycling bin (cite) and that's just the easily accessible tip of the iceberg. rotaryfun posted:Somehow I'm the rear end in a top hat because I'm a white male and some poo poo parent can't take care of herself and her kid. As soon I read "stay at home mother", I really thought you were going to concede that a two parent household where the mom gets to be a full time mom is an advantage some other people don't have. lol, guess not.

Once you know one, if you're still friends after a couple years, you'll know a bunch. That's kind of how the army gets lots of people. The army gives people a purpose that's going to be lacking in many other career paths. And honestly it's not the worst advice in the world. These people have gone on to have good careers with a good pension, great friendships developed from their very close working relationships, and overall pretty decent lives. But I live in Canada.

Suspicious Lump posted:This guy over at reddit/PF is recommending people join the army for "re-setting your life financially and professionally." And on the BWM side of things, there are people giving personal stories of how it didn't help too much, and in one case even hurt since their career development was so many years behind their peers: quote:Sure, if you have a useless degree and no job skills...the military is just perfect for you! I would recommend against joining the military straight out of high school unless it's just what you want to do. The four years of having my college paid for was not worth the 4 years I wasted in a god forsaken desert learning how to sweep sand dunes and call in air strikes. I'm so far behind my peers in earning potential at 27 years old that the student debt would have been worth giving up 4 years of my life to one of the worst organizations on the planet. Also from my own POV, if you're BWM then going into the military isn't magically going to fix that. The businesses near bases that exist to prey on impulse spending from soldiers are a cliche for a reason. Haifisch fucked around with this message at 23:50 on Nov 14, 2017 |

Yet, they're going into debt. That said, quote:My dad has not so much the problem but more my mother. Has a brand new truck, 6 horses, buys 500-1000 dollar pairs of boots, etc. She blows money left and right and my father is the supporter of her habits (Sounds oddly familiar now that I type it out... /sad) (He's still being kinda lovely blaming stuff on his girlfriend, when he's buying poo poo for his $175K/year-earning parents that they're never paying him back for. I'm sure they're both at fault, but holy poo poo they're earning enough that they should be able to pull things together without recriminations.)

It's actually really goddamn expensive to be poor, which makes it harder to pull yourself out of poverty. The book Nickel and Dimed covered it pretty well; without good credit and/or savings you inevitably pay more for the same things middle class people see as trivial expenses.

Some people are poor because of bad luck and some people are poor because they constantly make terrible choices. One is funny, the other isn't. The guy who founded a restaurant and sat in the freezer drinking all day is funny, the fact that his kids lost their house over it is sad.
