This times a million. CGI can be used to incredibly effective ends (almost always while working hand in hand with practical effects), but the more successful the execution the more likely it'll never be recognized as CGI. You remember the bad stuff, you don't remember the good stuff because you never realized it was CGI in the first place.

Absolutely. I don't want to come across as being some kind of effects purist. I think there are techniques like color washes that are overused now because they used to be impressive and are cheap to do now, sure. But, I'd never tell you to go back to Harryhausen practical effects just because.

Yeah, it's not VFX that's the problem so much as the overuse of bad VFX. As a VFX artist it's a point of pride when people don't realise that VFX is being used even in cases when it obviously will be.

That was a truly amazing battle and yeah I had no idea so much of it was CG until I watched some making off stuff. It's incredible how it all comes together, great work from everyone involved.

CGI is a good tool when used sparingly. Look at Fury road. Used a bunch of CGI but mainly did it to do things like hide safety equipment

Yes, I agree completely.

I re-watched part of Master and Commander for the zillionth time the other night. I noticed how they did some of their effects. There was a scene where the crew was cowering on deck, while shrapnel was flying everywhere around them.

When I looked very carefully, it appeared as if the shots had been done seperately. One shot of crew laying on the deck. One shot of things exploding everywhere from the same camera angle. Combine the two, and you have realistic looking people (because they're real) and realistic looking shrapnel (because its real too) stitched together.

This led me to think the real problem with CGI was generating physical objects from scratch. This is best left to physical objects, for reasons already stated in the thread.

Physical objects is actually the thing that CG does best as evidenced by the literally hundreds of films that you will have seen that have CG sets and props without you noticing, which is why most classic 'bad CG' scenes are either character or effects shots.

Like seriously, if a CG solid object (car, table, mug, whatever) isn't photo-realistic it's because of a bad supe/director not kicking it back to lighting/compositing or a horrible lack of budget, not because it 'can't be done'.

Having said that, the shot you're describing would have been an effects shot, which is a different kettle of fish but these days visual issues with effects are due to the skill of the people up top/budget rather than limitations in being able to make something photo-realistic from a technological or talent point of view.

A really neat look into this is the VFX breakdown for the series Mindhunter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di4Byf1EzRE

It's maybe a bit of a special case because Fincher is a bit insane, but it's remarkable to see how a bunch of incredibly minor adjustments can make a huge difference for the framing and mood of a scene. Really, what's more important than the pure technical quality is having a director who's experienced with using CGI and knows when and how to incorporate it into a shot.

My bud worked on the shot of Luke's robot hand and has shared many stories with me about low visibility vfx. My fave is that he had to change out a couch in his early days for some CSI style show. They didn't like the couch they shot with, so he vfx'ed to some different material and stuff lol

Whenever I think about that film I get sad/angry that it didn't do enough at the box office to warrant sequels. It was such a good film and there's such a wealth of material to adapt.

Yeah, that's amazing attention to detail there. I looked it up, and although California was an early adopter of curb cuts in some municipalities, as far as I can tell they didn't roll out super widely in the US until the Americans with Disabilities Act

Snipes decided he wasn't going to open his eyes in the shot, despite that being literally all that he had to do, so rather than deal with more of his poo poo the director just wrapped the shot and CGI'd the eyes in.
