There's no one I'd rather be than me.

Something the Reddit thread reminded me. Sargon decided to troll the comment section with a comment about the documentary COntra mentioned and everyone is shocked he got that far into the drat thing. From there I learned that a Sargon is 5 minuets.

I love the internet.

Edit: and...I wanna watch Shawn's new video. But man...Alpha Omega Sin is a dumb rear end.

I never understood this joke. I'm mainly familiar with Sargon because 1) he's a douchebag and 2) his videos tend to be HOURS AND HOURS in length.

He posted a youtube comment on someone’s refutation of one of his horrible videos where he complained that he shouldn’t have to endure any argument that couldn’t be summarized in five minutes.

EDIT: it may also be in reference to the fact that he’s obviously never read more than the first 20 pages of any source he quotes or cites.

It's both. Hbomb made a video about how Sargon doesn't read things, specifically about the "1 in 5" university sexual assault study. In that video Hbomb pointed toward a longer Garret video (now removed, unfortunately), which delved into more specific reading problems Sargon had with the study. Sargon left the "5 minute summary" comment on the Garret video and Hbomb brought it up in his video. However below Hbomb's video Sargon left a comment... after watching only 5 minutes of Hbomb's video.

There's like also documented proof via YouTube comment timestamps. The time from the moment he was made aware of said video to the moment he pushed the reply button on his response comment was roughly 5 minutes. For a video that was nearly 20 minutes long. Also yeah there's strong evidence that Sargon is a Trump-style functional illiterate person and reading things longer than a page and a half makes his brain place hurt with words that he hears and no one else seems to for some reason.

Yeah, violence isn’t fun unless your dominance over your target is all but assured, as in lynchings, police murdering people, and nazis going out in big mobs. Also you pretty much have to buy into a politics of dominance and absolute power to enjoy it.

I fear violence to some degree every time I go out to demonstrate against the nazi chuds in my town, and even if I had a deadly weapon or something that ensured my survival I can’t imagine I’d enjoy it at all.
I think it's more just that people love violence but not the consequences of violence. Even if those consequences are just having to to feel someone's face impacting your first. Like I like shooting people while paintballing but I wouldn't like having to deal with corpses even if there was no legal consequence or physical danger for doing so.

I've always felt like it's kinda weird how the Actual Nazi character is treated as a sort of wacky Kramer-like comic relief while the silly liberal, who generally believes the right things for the wrong reasons, is the main focus of the dressing down. Maybe it has to do with it being pretty much impossible to argue with Nazis, while liberals just need a little help on their way. That's what I feel the videos are for, really.

Contra's mockery of her own critics on the left seems like an attempt to find common ground with center-right people to get them to listen to her points. She seems like someone who genuinely wants to reach out to people on the right and bring them over. I totally get why people would feel alienated or betrayed though. The whole situation is uncomfortable.

Seriously? It's some fairly minor ribbing and it makes people feel this uncomfortable? Sorry about this folks, maybe it's because I don't get a lot of pushback against talking through these ideas, socialism etc, in real life that I don't get it, I do apologise.

I don't think it is to "bring round" the centre-right, though it probably helps, but it is more there to point out the old problem of "We need to examine ourselves a lot when we do things".

I think it's pretty admirable that she tries to engage people on the other side with the intent of changing minds rather than dunking on them for the entertainment of an audience that already agrees with her. Also it's way easier to talk about any issue in real life. People get super angry and defensive on the internet all the time for some reason.

Imo the issue is that her dressing down/criticisms of the left just so happen to mirror the same ones that the far right allege. Like, there are far left people that are basically Tabby, but I would say they're a definite minority. Acting like they're something worth addressing as a major criticism of the left is pretty much buying into far right propaganda, and is a large part of why, although Contra identifies as being fairly left, she comes across as much more a left-leaning centrist to me (and others, too, going by the common complaints on Twitter/Youtube/etc.).

She spent a few days on twitter ranting about how people weren't making good faith attempts to actually change nazi/terf/alt-right rear end in a top hat's minds because they too busy being mad and reactionary towards assholes because she gave an interview to a writer whose entire catalogue is very very focused on trans issues written like "Now I'm not saying Trans people are monsters and all crazy and need to be fixed but what's so bad about forced conversion therapy for trans kids? I'm just asking questions." While I understand she wants to make some outreach to actual alt-right shitheads since she used to have a lot in common with them and she herself made that turn, there's also a danger she flirts with a lot of legitimizing awful people and arguments that are indefensible elsewise. A lot of people brought this sort of thing up, but any critism of that was shot down by it getting lumped in with a tiny minority of legit crazy shouting internet assholes not making good faith arguments towards her decisions. This is what makes the constant 'ribbing' seem a lot less like haha jokes and more like actual disdain for people that thought "Hey maybe letting yourself be used as a prop to legitimize a TERF rear end in a top hat who spends his other articles fixated on forcing trans teenagers to just stop being who they are isn't good" while simultaneously making her more assholish characters (The Nazi, the terf) seem quaint and upstanding compared to the loud, obnoxious, childish leftists she often portrays. She mimics a lot of actual alt-right talking points about the left in these dressing down and it it makes the whole thing feel very skewed.

Her last few videos kinda sucked, is what I'm saying

Ah, got it. I feel the same way to be honest. I think it is so much harder to do nuanced critique/ humour in this medium. Which is a shame.

I mean I get what you are saying, and I don't want to dismiss it, but she acknowledges the violence inherent in systems that we have and says in terms of violent revolution "We need to make sure that it is right in the cost/ benefits analysis". That is pretty far to the left for most normal people, to declare that she is "probably centrist" seems a bit weird. Like I imagine that most people in the UK would call Jeremy Corbyn extreme and I don't think that he has ever called for the violent overthrow of the existing order.

And yes the Tabbys are a minority and she points out how, ultimately, they are decent people. At the same time though I can't help but wonder how much this is based off of being attacked by those sorts of people a whole lot. Like it does leave you feeling like you want to poke back.

nael posted:

True, but it can be hard to tell some times. Like "is this person just new and trying to be as good a person as they can be at this role" or are they just being angry because Leftism's legitimate anger helps to make them feel better about their own?

I think people who frequent discussions about feminism and especially LGBT-rights have just grown weary of supposed spokespersons constantly jumping ship with no warning. The distrust may seem hyperbolic but it is the result of this actually happening quite a few times in the last few years with Laci Green being the most overt case.

I know, but it's counterproductive to do so because the more we fear something is going to happen the more wary we are of it happening, making it more likely to happen. It's like if you are constantly clingy with someone in a relationship because you think they are going to leave you and then they leave because you are too clingy. I don't think Contra will leave "the Left" as it were, but it wouldn't surprise me if she stops making videos fairly soon.

Thing is that it's a self-feeding cycle in politics on social media. If you care too much about what your internet audience thinks of you then you're eventually going to push them away because there will always be someone who isn't satisfied. Contra has been in this long enough that she should know better and yet her reaction to last months drama was to keep engaging and keep being frustrated when a few purity checkers weren't satisfied with her answers. We've seen this before, if you're faced with backlash then you either apologize or double down on your original decision. Explain your decision as best you can but only do so once. Getting into a protracted personal slapfight on Twitter never leads anywhere productive.

Caring about how your audience responds to what you say and do is good but doing so the point of turning into a neurotic wreck is completely unproductive. Case and point:

Speaking of Laci Green... Since my dumb posts from earlier this year I've been studying Laciology and I've come to the conclusion, she's not some sort of pied piper figure. In retrospect its pretty obvious that her ~*big outreach*~ is a coping mechanism and also she's dating a chud and thus wants to learn more about chuddom. No 47th dimensional chess here. She's exactly who she's always been, firmly in the center. Continuing her feminism tinged Sex Ed 101 work while also doing stuff like retweeting Gavin Newsom saying CHIP needs to be funded or getting into pro-abortion arguments with guys with anime frog avatars is going to slowly further alienate the pepes who thought she turned into Cassandra Fairbanks or that one Canadian blonde who joined the crew of that pirate ship that was raiding refugee boats in Europe, I'm blanking on her name and I'm certainly not looking it up.

It's funny, yet sad.
