OK this is actually incredibly good. It's definitely not going to be for everyone here, basically sounding like someone took apart a black metal album, threw most of it away and built an offbeat new wave album out of the few remains. For me though it balances dissonance and melody so well, uses subtle swells and gradual developments so carefully and maintains atmosphere and tension so powerfully that I love it. All the tracks are good IMO but Your Skin Won't Hide You is a good sample:

Even though they have a couple too many new songs on the set list for my taste, the new Iron Maiden live album/DVD is great. Makes me want to see them again. Old as hell, but still put on a hell of a show.

I went the weekend before last, yeah. Mayhem is a mixed bag - there are a lot of true unkind things you can say about the band's modern incarnation, and it's kind of hard to get past how goofy a dude with a mustache looks in a robe, but they play well and Attila is super loving into it. Everyone's carrying around a ton of great art for their stage backdrops, Attilla's goofing around with candles and a skull while he sings, it's all kind of fun. My life doesn't feel more complete for having gone, but I'm also not a big Immolation fan. If you are, I would say it's definitely worth your time. While I was hanging out after the show I saw a guy who brought along his vinyl copy of every single one of their albums, and the band happily signed the entire stack for him. Cool guys.

Check out the album before this if you want a bit more of the black metallyness back in. "Nothing but the whole" was one of my favorite albums the year it came out.

The tomb mold album rules too, just played a DIY basement show with them recently in Chicago in a crusty house that would fit in the upside down of Stranger Things

I came across Nyn in bunch fo recommendations for wanky tech death. They're a little different from modern blasty-tech, a little more flowing plus a bit of Cynic worship too. Pretty fun find.

I of course am a sucker for anything super wanky or self indulgent like this, so could just be my terrible taste that makes it sound so cool.

Digging this. Between that, finally getting into Ne Obliviscaris with their new album and the new Archspire I’m feeling like I’m 18 again listening to shitloads of tech death.

tbh I really love the genre when the technicality is balanced right with good riffs and pacing. It’s good stuff. Maybe the rise of djent scared me away too much.

Tech death bands might be better if they wrote songs that were good, and also if they didn't use really unpleasant clean production that sounds like it's been sterilised with a laser.

Yeah as long as it’s heavy and doesn’t sound like clicky drums and full gain squashed guitars I’m into it. The last Obscura album was great too, avoided those issues for the most part.

I’m not into black metal, but I wanted to see what a show was like so I saw Mayhem on their last tour. Still isn’t really my thing but it was entertaining for sure. The vocalist is quite a character.

Mastering refinements from the original album:

● Drums & rhythm guitars slightly louder with little EQ polish
● Bass tighter and deeper
● Some upper mid frequencies' harshness refined from the overall master
● Better, snappier, punchier master bus compression
● Overall loudness about the same as Metallica's "Black Album"
● Other additional magical tweaks for orchestrations and vocals

I uh

okay

Does sound pretty good tho

I think I like it a little better than Time, so you might as well give it a shot! Has the same issues really, nice ideas in there and some great moments, just overlong and bloated.

At the time I was a moody metalhead guitar nerd teen trying to explore all the spookiest heaviest death metal and I swear it took me years to process how heavy that era of Cryptopsy was. The feel of NSV is tight but everything sounds organic, violent, disgusting. It’s such a loving unique sound.

I'm probably a bit older than you - I graduated high school just before NSV came out - but otherwise that's the exact way i think about that record. Over 20 years later it still sounds unique and special to me. I've since listened to a ton of brutal, technical death but NSV was my gateway, so to speak. Before that I really only listened to thrash and black metal.

Man, I think we're cut from the same cloth. I've enjoyed the poo poo out of the new Ne O and Archspire. I still think Urn is a little weaker than Citadel but it's still a pretty drat strong record.

I love the poo poo out of a variety of folk metal, and this is boring as gently caress and they dress like assholes. Nothing says "I'm an rear end in a top hat" like a top-hat, coupled with the lack of any sort of build-up or direction that song was awful, I couldn't make it all the way through.
