Yeah, it's 20 minutes because it's meant as a bloc for TV. At least in the USA, it was likely repurposed as a draw for Coco. We think that's nuts but who knows. Coco didn't seem that well-advertised out here.

They clearly had no idea how to market Coco. The international trailer uses a super sugary pop song that is nowhere in the movie for example. It's actually kinda weird how much the movie is geared towards a mexican audience, it must have been someones passion project because I cant imagine its making as much money as other Pixar productions

I dunno, I think it's doing pretty good despite the marketing:

It is very obvious the people in charge of the marketing don't understand how they can possibly sell this non-white movie to all audiences though because Hollywood is garbage

It broke ticket sales records (for an animated movie) in Mexico. And considered they took in one of the guys who was against Disney's "brilliant" idea of copyrighting/trademarking the words "Dia de Muertos" ,as an advisor, along with other people and actual Mexican families, yeah...the project probably slowly evolved in to a passion project. And I'm actually glad it didn't turn in to a cringe show of "what gringos believe is dia de muertos/life in a mexican small town".

As far as the US market is concerned it's doing better than The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 but not quite as good as Cars 2 (and nowhere near as good as Finding Dory or Inside Out) but it's still early days. It's also pulling fairly similar numbers to what Moana and Tangled were pulling at this point in their release. Here's a handy site that shows you all this in graph form!

So yeah, considering marketing it's doing pretty darn good.

forget about ur worries and ur strife
Coco destroyed records in Mexico and it's on pace for a breakout Zootopia-like run in China, considering it increased significantly first-to-second weekend there. Considering the relatively small stakes and uphill struggle of selling a new IP, Disney has to be happy with its performance in the States. Word of mouth will help it leg out over the holidays, especially since Disney will dangle Star Wars over theaters' heads to make sure it keeps screens amid the holiday crush.

It's actually going to be a strong Christmas season, so it'll be interesting to see where Coco ends up. There are eight movies coming out between Dec 15 and 25, not counting stuff that'll expand out of art houses in that time, so it's up to how well Coco can stack up against Star Wars, Jumanji, Ferdinand, Pitch Perfect and Greatest Showman.

Worst case scenario it'll make $500 million worldwide which guarantees profits. Anything above that is gravy.

And have we discussed the pleasant surprise of Coco and Book of Life having different-enough approaches to Day of the Dead that they can coexist? It's nice to see one didn't dominate the other.

Yeah I was worried Coco would be a Book of Life retread but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

They do have an awful lot of parallels though, don't they?

Main character is an outcast for pursuing music over his families traditional work, gets cursed and joins the ranks of the undead, needs to seek his deceased families help to get him uncursed.

Coco stands out, though, by having original songs instead of pop song covers, actually taking quite a significant amount of time exploring the world of the dead, and not having a really dumb framing device with some museum kid's running commentary.

I have one friend who has been posting about it on FB but only because he's in a hairless dog owners club and the film features a Xolo pretty prominently. The club is having a special screening as a fundraiser or something, someone's even bringing along a real life Xolo! It's in an outdoors theatre so they're encouraging people to bring their dogs and they'll be selling doggie treats at the concession stand.

That'll be in late late December, I don't think the film has actually opened in Australia yet?

AV Club tends to be dumb but I just wanted to link to that rather than the actual thing to give a layer between finding out what I was linking and deciding if you actually wanted to see it.
