The sword wasn't even visible on the top of the icicle, because bugs, but I was lucky enough to loot it by accident. That was what trivialized all encounters for me from then on, it would freeze everything I hit. Of course I too quit the game because of some bug stonewall that wouldn't let me progress the story, right after I exited the gargoyle city (which was also buggy). Oh lorde. I thought it was an epic quest of sorts. Well. what i'd do was stack empty vials, form a buggy ladder, then jump over boulders to "locked" areas I'm feeling an urge to download and install Daggerfall now just for kicks. I just found out it's free to download from the official elderscrolls website :P

it's more the latter, which everyone saw coming the core game is crap, mechanics are crap, content is crap. how people continue to keep the dream alive by buying $50 asset flip outhouses, I dunno

They fired a ton of the in house art team so they could streamline the buy Unity Assets and re-sell them to backers process. The game looks like a jumbled mess of blurry poo poo and they’re running housing raffles constantly so you’re seeing people that own 30 or more housing slots in a game that isn’t launched yet It’s not going to be a good game to play with friends

I'm in the same boat, I installed some alpha version years ago and there wasn't anything to do and none of it made any sense so I put it down but have sorta kept an eye on it. It doesn't sound like it's gotten much better besides being a whale farm for people who want to buy virtual plots of land.

All I remember about ultima ix was that you could steal anything from any shop in the game by glitching the camera through the glass case and just taking it. Also feeding poisoned bread to lord British.

I just sold my housing deed and I feel pretty good about getting out for almost what I pledged on the eve of "launch." I logged in the other day and played for a while. The controls are hideous. I did not make it far. The tiny overworld map is extremely jarring when you leave a scene. I was mostly excited about a Lord British story. When I tried this last time, "Arabella" the first NPC you encounter talked to me. She mentioned that I am the Avatar and there is an Oracle and also there was a cataclysm. So I typed "cataclysm" into their clunky rear end chat window. I got some "I don't know what that is" bullshit. For a major plot point like the word "cataclysm". Nice job, Lum. I ragequit right there.

Thought about this 40 gig unplayable alpha recently when Camelot Unchained announced they got $7.5 million from some of the same folks who backed DAoC, and the beard programmer next to Jacobs said something like "So I won't have to cut off my beard and sell locks of it for 5000 bucks?" Also after reading the previous page I think you guys should go easy on Lum, while this game is a permanent scam he is a good guy who just wants to keep his job, I would also be very interested in hearing the details of all the failure but it is probably not reasonable to expect or ask for it until it's all over I don't see a Camelot Unchained thread so I hope one of you MMO whales puts one up once they make the beta announcement in a month

I'm sure Lum is doing his best with Garriott who can't be bothered to actually care and Chris Spears who is just plain awful at game design. So actually, I will take back my jab at him. If he didn't have to force a story into Garriott's terrible dialogue system idea, Lum might have had a chance to make the NPCs say consistent things. The way it is now, 7/8ths of the things I type get a wtf response. NPCs who are placed a 10 second run from each other have no idea who the other one is. They bit off way more than they could chew with such an open ended system.

I'm all for sparing Lum some of the blame, but he consistently harped on game companies like this for years. When he joined, a lot of people were like "Oh, he's not gonna stand for any bullshit!" and expected him to help keep the project from turning into the current horror show of constant pledge drives, broken mechanics (like even basic combat is a mess), extremely low content (for any game, let alone an MMO) and a dev team who blubbers "But stuff is hard guys, who knew?? Let's sell some blood so you can have a single questgiver in this 50km area." Right now they are going to shove this out the door and then lay off all non-essential staff (everyone but the guys who can still asset flip for them, I'm guessing). The game that's releasing is pretty much it. It fulfills their promise of getting the game out the door, locks any and all refunds down (well they've been doing that for years now anyway), and stops backers from trying to find any legal recourse against them. This lovely mess is the best we'll most likely get. The hope that somehow another 50 hours of single player content and a rich, lore driven MMO that every player can affect will somehow spring up from this dysfunctional and amateur-hour team is a very, very silly one.

Logged in today to have a look. Think it's been 3 years since I bought it purely to give some money to Ultima-man, figuring that two months from release all they can have left to do is polish and optimisation passes, right? I can't even be angry, I just feel sorry for the folks that had to implement this mess. The game is just embarrassing. It looks like a bloody student project. Everything is so loving janky and brown. Every line of text is either a cliche or absolute nonsense... The combat is the cherry on the cake. I play MUDs that have more gameworld feedback in their combat systems than this game does. There are literally zero-budget, two man projects that are significantly better than this. Even in the same engine (check out Project Gorgon for a good example). God drat. How does the guy that made Ultima 7 turn around and make this? I wouldn't even put this monstrosity to my name if I was RG.

I mean Garriott is not in the office if what I've read is right. He basically hangs around in New York banging his wife and teleconferences in on a little rolling robot doohickey. I can't imagine he's super in touch with what's going on. I also feel like a lot of these old school MMO guys never figured out that WoW changed it so you can't just shove something janky and half-complete out the door then get 100,000 subscribers and work on fixing it. Basically they spent too much time reading the MMORPG.com forums, I guess.

My opinion is that Garriott is a kickass coder, but fails miserably at managing groups of people. Ultimas 1-5, which LB coded by himself, were incredible. Ultimas 6 and 7 were made by small teams; 6 was decent, 7 was brilliant but flawed. 8 and 9, coded by larger teams, were both pus-oozing sores on the buttocks of gaming.

CU is the only other game I backed besides this smoldering pile of poo poo. Their team seems to be making progress slowly but surely considering they're making an engine and assets from the ground up and one of their main programmers left because of creative differences. I hope it does well. It looks like it will be perfect for people that can't log 8 hours a day and just want a quick battle and be able to log off.
