I really liked both of those too. The impromptu poem (?) is what elevated Russell for me.

E: I think I lied. I hadn't seen the Key & Peele ep. It's fantastic.

People really didn't like Willow when it came out and it's decently respected now.

But the best example I can think of is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. It was savaged at release. Booed at Cannes. There were two more Twin Peaks films that were cancelled due to its harsh critical and box office reception. And now it's viewed as one of the most insightful and honest looks at incestual sexual abuse, as well as an awe-inspiring performance by Sheryl Lee. And some of the more incomprehensible Lynchiness has been decifered over the last couple of decades.

Peeping Tom was reportedly reviled when it first came out and now I'd hold it up against almost any of Hitchcock's films.

My hat is off to Scorcese for discovering it and rehabilitating Powell's reputation while he was still alive.

I think it's on iTunes or YouTube for $3

Edit: also a couple more re-evaluated films I'd been meaning to watch:

Edit: also there were supposedly many reviews writing off 2001 as incomprehensible garbage when it first came out, but I have no idea whether this view was the majority

Wasn't Star Wars panned by critics in pre-screening, then became a blockbuster upon release? The story I've heard is that Ebert was the sole critic who predicted Star Wars' success before it was released, making him the king of film critics; and jealousy of that 'lucky guess' is why Armond White is a contrarian dick on every film he reviews.

Watched Polka King last night and enjoyed it. Bernie is an easy comparison, but honestly it's nowhere near as good as Bernie was. It's humorous but not laugh out loud funny, it kind of feels like a Comedy Central version of a Lifetime movie. I can't imagine anyone other than Jack Black in the role, but to be fair I've been a fan of his since the early Mr. Show days. Jenny Slate and Jason Schwartzman were both terrific, and I really wish Vanessa Bayer had more to do because she was hilarious with what she was given. The mother in law was a super one note performance though, and the worst part of the movie.

We enjoyed JCVJ. In fact going to watch Timecop later today (should have watched it before) for the helluva it. I've seen it before a long time ago so who knows how many references I might have missed.

I will say his line of "No one has looked for me here in twenty years" and then panning to the location was the funniest drat thing I've seen in quite some time.

Nah, the critical praise was pretty widespread. Negative reviews were from John Simon and Stanley Kauffmann (and Harlan Ellison though he wasn't really a reviewer at the time), most critics liked it.

Schwartzman was way under used and yeah the mother in law was a terrible person but I think that's kind of what they were going for.

Basically just watch Bernie instead.

No. Fox thought it was going to be a very expensive disaster, which is why they exerted some tighter controls on the additional material Lucas wanted to shoot (and got the distribution rights to the movie in perpetuity) in exchange for the $1.5 million he needed to finish the film.

I think the idiosyncrasies that made both The Night of the Hunter and Joe Versus the Volcano critical & commercial failures in their initial release are now what distinguishes them and have partially elevated their reputations.

The way this was done is still inexplicable to me. That it was done I can understand if not condone (they were too precious about the material, too faithful, wanted to give everyone and everything a send off, etc.) but what was with all the slow fades to black? And white? It wasn't far removed from just having Peter Jackson's fat face flash on screen and scream "Psyche!"

I went to midnight Fellowship and a fire alarm was pulled as they crossed the mountains. Missed 20 minutes of the movie, got back in and the theater went back but missed a few minutes of it, didn't refund. Went to see it again the next day at a different theater and had a fire alarm at drat near the same moment. Fire alarm has yet to go off in my house when I watch it, but I always half expect it to happen.
