And now it's viewed as one of the most insightful and honest looks at incestual sexual abuse, as well as an awe-inspiring performance by Sheryl Lee. And some of the more incomprehensible Lynchiness has been decifered over the last couple of decades.

My hat is off to Scorcese for discovering it and rehabilitating Powell's reputation while he was still alive. Watched Polka King last night and enjoyed it. Bernie is an easy comparison, but honestly it's nowhere near as good as Bernie was. It's humorous but not laugh out loud funny, it kind of feels like a Comedy Central version of a Lifetime movie. I can't imagine anyone other than Jack Black in the role, but to be fair I've been a fan of his since the early Mr. Show days. Jenny Slate and Jason Schwartzman were both terrific, and I really wish Vanessa Bayer had more to do because she was hilarious with what she was given. The mother in law was a super one note performance though, and the worst part of the movie.

Nah, the critical praise was pretty widespread. Negative reviews were from John Simon and Stanley Kauffmann (and Harlan Ellison though he wasn't really a reviewer at the time), most critics liked it.

No. Fox thought it was going to be a very expensive disaster, which is why they exerted some tighter controls on the additional material Lucas wanted to shoot (and got the distribution rights to the movie in perpetuity) in exchange for the $1.5 million he needed to finish the film.

The way this was done is still inexplicable to me. That it was done I can understand if not condone (they were too precious about the material, too faithful, wanted to give everyone and everything a send off, etc.) but what was with all the slow fades to black? And white? It wasn't far removed from just having Peter Jackson's fat face flash on screen and scream "Psyche!"

I’m a fan of the books and the first two movies (I loved FOTR), but I didn’t like ROTK. Still even it wasn’t as bad the Hobbit movies. I wish Peter Jackson would go back to horror movies or stuff like Heavenly Creatures.

Fire alarm has yet to go off in my house when I watch it, but I always half expect it to happen.
