Red China Blues was a solid read when I read it years ago. Sort of the tale of the emergence and ultimate disillusionment of a Canadian-Chinese proto-wumao in Cultural Revolution era China.

I would blow Dane Cook posted:"Or how about this one? Remember when it was the day after the election, and the president of Taiwan called Donald Trump to congratulate him? And Donald Trump, of course, took the call and talked to the president of Taiwan. The problem with that was… Taiwan doesn’t have a president. The United States functions on what they call “a one China policy,” and Taiwan is a renegade province of said China. And Donald Trump didn’t know that, and picked up the phone and started yammering away, and… the media ate his rear end up. And I’m not gonna lie, I was laughing, I was like, “Oh, poo poo. This dumb motherfucker is in trouble.” And then that night, I was in bed drifting off to sleep, and then, I had to admit it to myself. I was like… “I didn’t know that poo poo, either.” And then I realized the media got the story wrong. The story wasn’t that Donald Trump took the call. The biggest story is that nobody told Donald Trump not to take the call. That’s terrifying." that 2nd part of his stand up is terrible and it feels like the first part is 99% walking back his trump support

I fully support boars getting even with us. Related, there's a story I love about how one of the University of Arkansas' live boar mascots escaped one time and went on a farm-destroying rampage before he was finally brought to justice. Edit: from the UofA website: "Former mascot Big Red III escaped from an exhibit near Eureka Springs in the summer of 1977 and ravaged the countryside before being gunned down by an irate farmer. Another live mascot, Ragnar, was a wild hog captured in south Arkansas by Leola farmer Bill Robinson. Before Ragnar’s spree was done, the mighty animal had killed a coyote, a 450-pound domestic pig and seven rattlesnakes. Ragnar died in 1978 of unknown causes." Black bears are weak and will run away unless they're starving. Boars are just angry and they know you eat their swine brethren.

Another good read is that one former mod who ran a livestock farm in the US and made an ask/tell. Most of his animals were nice, maybe weird, but his relationship with his pigs was more like "tentative truce". He was worried about doing repairs in the pig sty because he would always seem to catch the pigs weakening the foundation or chewing out the supports on stuff he needed to climb. If you die or become injured in the midst of pigs, they will advance upon you and break your bones off and feast.

I worked an archaeological excavation in Hungary that was shut down three or four times all summer because of wild boars. It was actually nice because otherwise we would have only had one day off all summer.

if boars are a consistent problem i'm quite surprised they don't have spears at easy arm's reach. even something like a pitchfork definitely will not substantially harm a boar but gives you the leverage you need to use its own bulk against it. a sharpened piece of rebar is actually even better because it'll get stuck in the boar and throw the pig off balance as it tries to tear rear end around. i mean, a big gun is best for sure, but on ranches in Oklahoma where this is an issue they tend to have spears of some description hanging from every structure like fire extinguishers, in case a boar gets uppity and you don't exactly have the gun.
