(I hope Chiang wins, I'd rather whatever fate crazy fate he would have had in store for us than Mao and his cult, the GLF and CR.) It's part of why I'm so interested in and keep asking if Grey will fight on after game victory, will Korea and China fall to the Russians (before the Allies combined get enough points to force Japan to surrender) or will Japan cave to America's bomber fleet and nukes first by folding on points before Soviet domination of the Korean Peninsula and China is a fait accompli? Is it as impossible as people say for Grey to hold out against the Russian military, even if he clears out Chongqing? Probably. But it'd be nice to see him try. Boom! I continue to be disappointed in my air force. They just seem good for dying at the moment. Carriers buzz the hero force. They survive this wave without loss. Somehow they make it through the second wave as well! The guns of Wake are killing them! We get the reports that the enemy retires after this! Those were two nerve-wracking strikes!

In a rare concession to gameplay over realism, the game allows ships to move even when out of fuel. The TF can only move one hex per turn but the ships probably don’t count as dead in the water. I think they will start to rack up damage just from being out of fuel though.

Months ago after Grey had destroyed a particular HQ unit in China someone pointed out that he had managed to kill a similar one a few weeks before, leading to the conclusion that in this timeline both Chiang and Mao are both dead. Considering that Grey has fully occupied all of Yunnan, Southern China, and most of Northwestern China it's also a fair assumption that the leaders of the various warlord cliques are dead as well. If the Soviets don't take a significant chunk of China by the time the war is over then the ensuing anarchy will make the Russian Civil War look like a tea party.

You walk into your Oval Office and see the neat handwritten note from FDR apologizing for killing the entire USMC three times over oh and by the way, we’re gunna have a superweapon online in a few months that can vaporize cities. I think you're probably right re: an occupation zone, although I think it'll ultimately depend on how long the war lasts after Soviet intervention and how costly their campaign in China ends up being. Stalin had somewhat wanted to administer the occupation of Hokkaido, but it was a tough sell without possessing it at the war's end or having been in the war longer than a week. A more meaningful soviet contribution changes the situation. This also opens the can of worms of what the American foreign policy outlook is after the war. It does make intuitive sense that we'd have President Dewey in this timeline, but I wonder how strong the Taft wing of the party would be.

Wake continues to be lit by burning ships. Carriers spotted! In we go! We take heavy plane losses, but we get the key hits in! In comes their reply.... Owch! Damage control to their stations! Hero squadron draws off a few planes. The afternoon strike on the other group only gets one dud on target. We also lose a lot more planes. Dead in the water, but still in the water! Things continue to go well at Wake. We paid for those hits with our planes. Two or three CVE's makes for good news though! The torpedo hit is survivable though!

What would an human player do right now as USA (assuming there aren't 20 carriers converging on the sitting ducks)? Instinctively, I'd take a 2 weeks to 1 month break to concentrate a proper task force and avoid further losses if I don't have enough assets in the area, but to be honest I have no clue or knowledge on what assets are available to PACCOM at this point in time, what toys are rolling out of the shipyards right now and in general what are the options. Anyone with actual knowledge wanna chip in?

Regarding pilot quality, one important thing to keep in mind is that's only initial quality. Training can fix a lot. The Allies get a couple very green squadrons in early '42, and I don't even move them to the front until most of the pilots get their xp and main skill from the <30 they start at to around 50. It doesn't take that long, either. At 100% training, you can expect a point in each every day or two. Probably won't help the groups at airbases being bombed incessantly, but carrier pilots should have no problem getting some practice in as their ships repair, refit, etc. I don't think training missions can get them to pre-war Kido Butai levels of experience, but they should get good enough to not be free points whenever they run into a pair of Spitfires.

As a human USA player, at this point you are getting enormous amounts of everything. You get together a nice big amphibious invasion force with a bunch of CVEs for CAP and ASW, escorted by a huge carrier task force filled with well trained pilots (you have been running your pilot training program, haven't you?) flying very effective aircraft. Put some upgraded fast BBs in there for crazy AA support. Have a few powerful surface task forces tagging along to engage any surface raiders that show up. The Japanese player will have a hard time stopping this without a total concentration of force and some luck. Once your guys are ashore, you use your almost limitless supply, late war infantry advantage (not to mention armor), and good ole' American gumption to overwhelm the defenders. Basically, at this point you have the advantage in almost every concievable area. You just have to be able to concentrate it effectively. Edit: Don't forget pre-invasion bombardment missions and airstrikes to strangle the defenders of supply, increase their disruption, and generally make their life hell. pthighs fucked around with this message at 20:55 on Mar 30, 2018 |
