The body horror stuff with the Borg in FC works really well and then Voyager made it into something you can just easily fix.

Real talk though, Shakaar was being a real rear end in a top hat. Sure the Kai was being an rear end in a top hat too. But trying to get Bajoran exports going and generating a real economy seem like a higher priority for those reclamators than his 30 person farm. She was wrong and bad and should’ve been ousted due to a lot of other bullshit she was pulling. That one aspect though made zero sense.

Frakes did a good job of making the ship feel like it was working against the crew too. There is a scene in the theatrical cut where the security team is trying to run from the borg, open a dark room and there is a beat and you see one laser, and then another laser, and then another until they realize they ran into a room of assimilated crewmen and their fate is sealed. super creepy.

I also like the one where Picard has to kill an assimilated crew-woman before she loses her free will. I think there is also another one where you see freshly assimilated crew members having the implants put on and it’s so creepy. Voyager (specifically Unimatrix Zero) trivializes the whole thing by the Doctor being able to prevent their full assimilation and then just undo all of the implants with no real effects.

Minidust posted:Yeah like I understand the practical real-world demands that made them blow up the D in Generations, but it's a shame it wasn't around in First Contact. FC gets so intimate with this ship that we barely know. Seeing a bunch of familiar setpieces get transformed would've had more impact. Walking in spacesuits on the D's hull would have been so much cooler! Don't forget that after Generations, an -E label was affixed to the saucer to replace the -D, just in case they decided not to go with a new design. And then who comes around but JOHN loving EAVES

Design concerns notwithstanding... somewhere there's a balance between TMP's 10-minute starship porn scenes and FC's "hey new ship check it ou-CAPTAIN'S LOG"*cuts to interior*

TNG didn't show the holodecks used for sex much because most of the characters were perfectly capable of getting laid with other people. I understand the arguments for using the D in First Contact but the sets looked like hot nineties garbage by then and all of the low-light scenes would have been even worse.

Timby posted:Doesn't Geordi get ready to deck him until Riker walks in? They were definitely in each other's faces and Riker said later it looked like they were about to start throwing punches. Given the riot that breaks out later in Ten-Forward, I could see it having gone that far if Riker hadn't walked in. I mean, the real unintentional comedy there is that, as I recall, Riker walked in sometime between "...what did you just say?" and "You heard me!" i.e. Wesley is being incredibly hostile and insubordinate to a senior officer. Riker asks what's going on, and Wesley just storms out with "may i be excused" without waiting for a response. Geordi could nail Wesley's nuts to the wall and Riker would have to back him up in that moment. But he doesn't. He'd have to put it on the record that Wesley Crusher was antsy to get off work to go on a date, and when Geordi tried telling Wesley his date was out of his league, Wesley burned him hard.

Using a The Enterprise E, however, doesn't turn on a dime. It's as nimble as a battleship; as agile as a "12"-year-old Chinese female gymnast who has King Kong on her back, who has Godzilla on his back. It makes no sense. It is so unrealistic and laughable that by comparison, having an old-fashioned wooden helm (a ship's wheel) pop up from the floor would be less ridiculous. And I'd love to see a helm pop up from the floor, smoothly rising so that the pegs can meet Riker's hands as a white sailor's hat is lowered to his head and a pipe is inserted into his mouth. When everything snaps into place, there's a "TOOT TOOT!" alert that warns the helmsman that control has been shifted to manual.

I remember getting a huge kick () out of playing Independence War with the force feedback joystick. Firing guns gave little pulses, taking hits on the shields was a nice little thump, but man when you took a hit straight to the hull that fucker kicked! The variable resistance on the stick was also a neat touch.

I loved those joysticks but they broke so easily. I think I went through three of them. I also used them for everything, including Half-Life and Shadows of the Empire, and that’s why I’m a broken inverted axis player today.

I know it would be an unfilmable bloated mess, but I would have liked to see a First Contact that included some of the DS9 cast. I get that the point of The Emissary is that Sisko is no longer stuck in his memory and has started to move on, but I still would have liked him and Picard to really express to each other what they lost and why they both need to stop The Borg at any cost. The only time we get to see them interact that I can recall is when Picard still outranks Sisko and is basically telling him to get his poo poo together or retire so they can get someone to do this job, and to have them meet on equal footing and both have catharsis and come to understand each other would have been fun to watch. A bonus of this is that instead of Nemesis, we might have gotten a full movie with the DS9 cast.

My fantasy best TNG film would have been a combination between Generations and First Contact. The plot already includes time travel - it would have been pretty easy to contrive Kirk into the story. Then you could have had the emotional hit of the Borg slowly converting the Enterprise D, Kirk as the one to talk down Picard, and an ending that lets Kirk go out the way he deserved - riding the Enterprise into destruction.
