Fair point. I hate people who just drop their butts wherever. Like speed limits, it would be better to enforce the laws we have on a consistent basis, rather than recognizing that there's a huge problem with people not obeying the current laws and suggesting that the solution is to make the laws even more restrictive.

Let’s be a bit more clear on this. The nazi March was small as hell and basically dispersed quickly in the face of a ton of resistance from local socialist, antifa and labour groups. As a neighbourhood local, I can tell you that most people here loving love the status quo and could care less about any group or individuals as long as hey don’t intrude on their upper class lifestyle. Needless to say they are not happy that anarchists hosed up some windows and it’s still some insane deal despite every business making money hand over fist afterward. It is really a bubble here, tons of Toronto expats who really don’t have connection to the city aside from the local neighbourhood.

Hamilton is really hosed; gentrification is in a turbo charge and our civic leaders really are ignorant of it at best and actively promoting it through poor planning at worse. A while ago (almost a decade now) the local paper did an awesome investigation into the poor health outcomes of a number of neighbourhoods focusing on poverty and such. Really forward thinking and the city responded by putting a ton of resources into these places. Some of these are gorgeous neighbourhoods with old century homes converted into triplexes and such because there was no way you would have been able to sell it for anything and no one could afford rent on a whole place etc. These neighbourhoods predictably are gentrified as gently caress now, many multiple housing units (legal and illegal)are being converted back to SFH and rents are skyrocketing. Poverty is being pushed elsewhere in the city but those resources are not following. Our public services are being underfunded by a neolib municipal government which is making these issues more difficult to deal with. I could go on forever.

The cops have protected the fash here repeatedly and they can operate right in the open. It’s insanely hosed. The media here is pretty reactionary and bad. Some of the anarchists are really great but the group has a bad reputation even amongst progressive people because in the past a lot of pretty well off young people used to associate with them and just acted like pricks. The vandalism kinda perpetuated that view, it was dumb as gently caress.

This neighbourhood may be bougie af but a lot of people here are not. It was only a decade ago you could get a huge rear end century home for less than 200k and there are still a lot of healthcare and education people in the area. There has been a wild influx of Toronto money in the past few years though. You can really see the difference walking through the alleys. Massive additions to homes, lots of luxury cars, coach houses converted into apt/Airbnb etc.

Locke st kinda epitomizes the nouveau riche bougie lifestyle. 4 dollar gourmet donuts, a store dedicated to pet furniture that costs more than my human furniture, starbucks and so on. Some of the cars you see parked on the street probably cost more than what a house did in that neighbourhood 15 years ago. The antique stores of old are long gone. Moved to Ottawa street (which also got gentrified so some just shuttered or left the city)

They didn’t do anything directly per say, it’s just what they represent.

They explained that a bit in their little blog post

quote:

All my worst bosses have been small business owners — the problem isn’t the size of the business, it’s that the relationship is exploitative. When someone decides to be a capitalist, making money through their investments rather than through their labour, their position relative to changes in the city becomes fundamentally different. Gentrification, as an example: when rents go up, it means they make more money (rather than lose their home); when prices go up and rich people move in, it means a chance to sell luxury goods (while we work for minimum wage); when more police and surveillance come in, it secures your investment (while we get harassed and pushed out). They are getting rich because our lives are getting worse.

Sure, small business owners may work long hours, but even if I’m putting in 12 hour days next to my boss, and we both scrub the toilet, the fact that they own and I work means our relationship to the work is totally different. When business is good (or when they manage to crowdfund), they’re taking out a new lease on a car or signing a mortgage on an investment property while my check is eaten up by rent, bills, and the grocery store. I’ve got no option but to show up tomorrow while their ability to enrich themselves increases.

gently caress the rich. gently caress capitalists (even the ones who sell high-end baked goods). And to all of you who want to complain about violence, remember that the only reason these parasites get to keep their hands clean is because most often their attacks just look like business as usual.

And so they smash a few windows and then run away and the shop keepers and patrons turn away from collective socialist ideals and more towards fascism as a response.

I'm not saying that their complaints against gentrification and the ownership class aren't legitimate, just that they're loving stupid if they expected any other response to their actions.

Who the gently caress with any actual ability to influence society going to see a bunch of anarchist kids smashing windows and think 'their ideas have merit and I wish to subscribe to their newsletter and attend their next meeting.'

He's right about all government being violence though. He's lucky to be on the receiving end of our relatively benign democratic violence.

I don't think this pushes people towards fascism, just highlights why our existing system is pretty awesome.
