What settings do I need to change in order to speed up combat/movement? Getting slightly annoyed at how long everything takes to move.

Side note there was a mission to extract some civvies from a warzone and you need to escort them to an extraction point. The problem is once you clear out the initial blocking force you end up with no enemies on the field until the civ APCs are in the extraction zone. At which point the game spawns 4 light mechs right on top of the extract so trying to kill 'em off without losing an APC (thanks to surprise attack initiative making it so they're all going first) is more luck than anything else. Definitely one of the worst designed missions I've encountered so far.

I didn't realize the enemy can spot for the dumb LRM turrets so I got myself into a bit of a pickle engaging the first two idiots and getting pelted with annoyingly accurate missile fire.

yeah this was the major source of 90% of the damage i took in the mission. i assumed all the turrets would be laser based, and after the first salvo thought getting behind a mountain would break their ability to fire on me, which was a notion that the second salvo disabused me of

Any mission with vehicles as objectives seems to suck. I had one where I had to blow up a convoy of them with a couple mech escorts. Easy. Except they move super fast and were on a road so it was less of an ambush and more my mech chasing them like a dog after a truck.

Better LOS indicators would go a long way, or some way to break LOS like smoke or something. Since "cover" is pretty vague here compared to something like XCOM we kind of need something.

Not only that, but you can also get the passive benefits of tactics if you grab whatever capstones you prefer first. Sensor lock is poop in comparison to getting +1 evade while moving or half damage when standing still. Granted, the second capstone in Tactics is the beesknees, but requiring Sensor Lock makes it so much worse.

Indirect fire (LRMs with the curved arc) accuracy is only dependent on tactics, not gunner.

Also, right-click an enemy to bring up their mech readout so you can check their damage and where the components are.

If you want to use backstabby light mechs, get the 2nd piloting skill, it's insane.

Honestly, I feel like the game is pretty much optimally done with a guts 1/gunnary 2 built. I experimented with other setups, but I keep coming back to it because the 50% damage resistance, split fire and high to hit bonuses are just so critical.

Throw on some tactics to reduce min range penalties and you can just laugh all over people with medium lasers and srms, while also carrying an ac/5 or ac/10 and a small lrm rack to smack people with the alt fire at a distance.

Also, SRM-6++ with damage boosts are utterly disgusting for what they do. The 2 point damage boost puts you up to the same damage as an AC/10 with a fraction of the heat.

One question I did have is if there is some hidden perk to sensor lock I am missing. I've yet to find myself in a position where I need the sensor lock to get LOS, and the -2 evasion seems like an enormous waste when I could remove 1 evasion by shooting. Even on a full stacked light I still have about 40-50% chance to hit, which makes giving up all shooting a total waste. Doubly so when I can multi-fire and take off a total of three evasion, albeit on multiple targets.

Sensor Lock you can do from out of line of sight do you don't have to expose your scout to fire and you trade doing damage for two attack rounds worth of evasion removal. Pretty good if you're trying to do indirect fire instead of Brawl Squad.

Hoho didn't realize you could do that.

So could you grab two other level 5 skills, then skip Sensor lock and grab Master Tactician? Or does the second capstone always require the first?

Having fun with it so far as a lifelong Battletech nerd who's going in with the realization that there's no way it could live up to what I've been yearning for for 30ish years. Nothing bad to say about the combat really, it needs to be sped up some but I imagine it will be, otherwise it's all good.

Complaints:

-starting fresh is going to be rough since the first five hours or so are very much on rails, and not exciting rails either.

-the story suuuucks. Unless there's a really surprising twist coming Arano has Mary Sue written all over her. This is one of very few game universes where there are no true good guys, and yet here she is.

-the radio chatter in combat is awful. I especially hate the whole "waiting on you commander" and "yes commander" poo poo. It gives the impression that I'm supervising a timid crew of mice who don't dare do anything without running it past command first. They're supposed to be professionals. It'd be much better if they just reported what they were doing after I clicked the buttons as if they'd come to the decision themselves.

I guess my main complaint so far is it looks and plays like Battletech but it doesn't feel like Battletech.

No, the capstone skill requires the first one. If you notice, any character with the two L5 skills has the skills and capstones from the other trees removed from the UI, to make clear that all you get is the passive benefits.

The story does not seem exactly a masterpiece but, um, a Battletech story with a Mary Sue is hardly uncharted territory (assuming you read any of the novels anyway). I guess the innovation here is that the Mary Sue is actually female this time.

Yeah Lights/Sensor Lock seem......bad.

I keep seeing pro TT players talking about the Reserve trick of having them come in after and attacking dudes from behind then going back to safety, but I don't think that particular TT trick translates very well. The gently caress would I have a lovely little mech that can get cored and cost me a pilot from a single attack running around giving me -2 Evasion or a cheapshot attack with their single lovely little Laser that was all they could mount when instead I could grab another Medium and give them the Multistrike combo with some actual good weapons like PPCs.

Even the idea of turning them into mobile artillery platforms that focus on Indirect Fire is flawed by virtue of that spot could be filled by another Medium or Heavy that has better talents like Multistrike.

I think they just don't translate well to a game where you start deep in the hole and are basically scrapping the barrel. They seem like a unit that only shines once you get into the better ones.
