Would you like a
second chance?
The first new mech I was able to salvage was a fire starter so I put Medusa in it and loaded it with 5 mlas. Now I have a jeager griffin and a couple panthers but medusa and his laser scalpel firestarter has been my mvp for the last 4-5 missions. I was a sceptic about using lights once I had something heavier bit guess since I have to think more when I use him my firestarter ends up tying up 3 times his tonnage on most missions while my heavier units get into position to let loose.

After the initial "can't log into my Paradox account" crap and having a really fun first 10 hours (with only one save scum after losing Behemoth to LRM turrets hitting her cockpit a bunch), I have been hit with the "can't continue or load campaigns, or use skirmish mode" bug. Which means all I can do is watch the intro video.

edit: fixed after updating my display drivers (what the hell?)

So many of these "can't continue" bugs are actually UI bugs due to a) issues with the resolution you're trying to play at, b) issues with trying to play in fullscreen mode (or windowed mode, or fullscreen windowed mode if you're sneaky and use the -popupwindow launch option), or c) both, so I can imagine that updating video drivers would actually be very helpful.

So how exactly does the multi shot work? I havent quite figured it out.

Click the multi target ability, then click up to three mechs to target (they will be labeled as A, B, and C in order), then click each weapon until the letter it shows in its icon matches the better of the mech you want to shoot it at.

Actually I would also really appreciate advice on how to build your mechs out after Three Years and good customization options. I haven't played a BT game in years and barely remember what a PPC is.

Rule of thumb is max out the frontal torso and arm armour of all your mechs that you expect to be taking damage (aka everything but your LRM boat).

Try to do the story up until you get the Argo before you fart around in space mercing it up. Major refits in the Leopard's mech bay is the worst thing ever.

Small Lasers, MGs and Flamers fire for free when you melee. The Shadow Hawk has grabby hands so it does more melee damage (80 damage, so 5 more damage than 3 Medium Lasers). Rip the SL off the Vindicator and give it to the Shadow Hawk so you can punch the poo poo out of more Lights. Obviously when Heavies start showing up you should probably stop punching as much with your Shadow Hawk unless you're confident. The huge engine on the Shadow Hawk limits how much firepower you can bring but lets you do a shitload of punching and later, scouting for your big mechs.

The Vindicator is a decent PPC platform so you can do fine just armouring up. I'm not a fan of one off LRMs unless you have multi targeting so you can remove it for space. Alternatively replace the PPC with a Large Laser and fill up on SRMs to make a brawler.

The Blackjack can be converted to all lasers or lopsided with one AC5, it's up to you. AC2s are MLs that need ammo and are also like 5 tons and lose accuracy at ML range so yeah, gently caress em

The Jenner is probably the best all around choice as a scout early on but is still pretty noob unfriendly. Its alpha strike capability is stronger than most of your mediums but it can't sustain more than 2 turns of alpha striking before running into heat. Removing the JJs as suggested by a goon earlier is a good idea to shore up the paper thin armour it comes stock with and maybe a heatsink too. Just don't leave the armour stock because the AI will chase your Jenner to the ends of the earth to finish it off, trust me.

The Cent is your first real weapons platform. The engine is tiny so it's slow as gently caress but that leaves you more tonnage to play with than the heavier Shadow Hawk. You can play it as support by sticking LRM20 + 2LRM5s on it or you can go brawl with an AC10 + 2MLs. Or AC20 + 2SRM4s and pray you don't run out of ammo. Have fun with it! The cent has a lot of room to play around with.

E: these are the mechs that anyone can get early on fwiw, I still haven't gotten a dang Panther so I have no opinion on it for example and I ditched the Spider really early for a Jenner

The assassinate missions are sort of easy because the escorts generally are between you and the target; they're also usually lighter weight mechs or vehicles. So by the time you get to the guy you're supposed to be taking out you're maxed out on morale, so alpha striking some legs with concentrated fire will usually succeed. I have parts for 4 different heavies through doing this.

Head targeting might as well be a crapshoot though, I've managed to kill pilots maybe twice out of 60 or so mech kills.

Can I sell the partial mech salvage I get after a mission? Or do I have to actually assemble the mech first? It seems to be worth a lot per the mission complete report, but it's not showing up in the store under the sell tab.

He missed a building sized stationary target.

The %s show your chance of hitting the various locations based upon what part you're targeting. It weights the hit location table, not the to-hit. (Unless you're using the morale strike ability)

Your to-hit number (next to your weapons) is always your to hit number. The called shot popup lets you know that IF you hit, you have X Y Z percent chance to hit X Y Z part. Facing matters; if you're attacking from a mech's right side you can't hit their left arm, for example. I don't know 100% how it works but the percent % to hit a part seems to be a combination of where you are aiming and the size of the part. That's why even if you aim for the head you only get a 2% chance to hit it, it's a small hard to hit target.

ah, didn't mean to be a pedant about it, just that a locust is basically two legs with a machinegun and it would be mean of them to randomly start you with one on the first mission in place of the spider

Same. It's pretty clear they tried to go for a "cutely present this game as if it could be played on a fantastical version of a tabletop in someone's game room" style. I mean, the customization and barracks interfaces both have a literal miniatures painting station and MechWarrior RPG character sheets in them, for Pete's sake.

I have others, but mostly to experiment with. This team is what carries me through the harder missions.

I'm with you. There's an understated quality to everything, it's all a little dusty and lived-in in a way that feels very deliberate. There are moments when the camera looks up at a stomping mech's silhouette against the blue-ish night sky as it crests a hill dotted with swaying foliage and the game looks downright fantastic.

Then again, there are also moments where the camera looks at a boulder for eight seconds until a mech backs its rear end directly into the camera. Then the game looks even better.
