Neither gates nor gonzalez was half the all around tight end that Witten was. Witten was actually a blocker and half a lineman rather than just an oversized receiver.

The funny thing is Gonzalez after the first 6 or so years of his career became a decent blocker.

Hell just ask Fiz, according to him he blocked every linebacker or safety who tried to defend him once he became a Falcon according to him.

Gates could block. It just wasn't his primary job.

It's not like Deion and tackling

Surely his primary job is dependent on the play call?

Blocking is a luxury with modern tight ends. You can always stick a 6th lineman on the field to block, you can't find many giant guys with ups who can catch a 20 yard seam pass. You mostly want your TE to do a quick chip block on an edge rusher and go out for a pass

The advantages of having a TE who is actually a TE and can block are numerous.

Disagree strongly. You can run a killer hurry up if you can effectively run or pass thanks to a pass blocking, pass catching TE like Gronk.

Which is to catch passes 90% of the time because keeping prime Antonio Gates in to block is loving stupid and misusing him.

That's why teams that have a really good TE typically run a lot of two TE sets. The Chargers did this a lot with Gates and Brandon Manumaleuna.

I expect to see a lot of it this season with Hunter Henry and Virgil Green

Blocking is a small part of a TE's game, it's like saying Antonio Brown isn't a great receiver because he's too short to throw an end zone fade to.

If you put in another Olineman they know you're running, if your TE can block you can run or throw.

You think anyone loads up for the run when they see Jimmy Graham out there?

I was slightly annoyed that the Dallas tweets were talking about how no tight end had been a first ballot hall of famer then talking about how Witten should be the first the year before Tony Gonzalez was eligible, so I'm not going to hate on you at the moment.

Depends on the team, TE's are required to block more on some teams than others..

Also that last comment was just to wind Ross up more tbh.
