I've always been a fan of Tool. Massive tool, on the other hand, does tend to run me off. So does too little tool. But when you get just the right mix of Tool, everything in Arizona Bay is perfect. I'll even take swimming lessons before mom takes it all away.

edit: goddamnit, new page, this makes even less sense without quotes. Not that Tool lyrics, or embedding them into posts, make much sense anyway.

Barely made it to a place in a friend's ford galaxy. There was a sudden bang and the car lurched forwards and then it seemed to be in neutral whilst the dash bleeped transmission error. It worked for a short time after cycling the engine before doing the same again.

Had to coast it into the car park before leaving it

Its taken a few weeks, but im finally starting to get away from having the mud/gravel amalgam for a driveway that ive put up with for the last 3 years. Had 6 pallets of pavers delivered, 650 bricks per pallet, 1.7 tonnes per pallet. Got two full pallets left to get rid of, so that's this weeks goals after work. Then we get to hire a brick saw, cut all the ones that need cutting, sand the whole mess, hit it with the vibrating plate and concrete the edges in.

its also really novel to step out of the back door of the house onto a solid surface, not pallets nailed together with planks on top acting as duckboards over the top of a swampland.

Oh. And there's 7 more pallets of pavers still to be delivered. We're 8m down a 24m long driveway that's 3.9m wide...

Not terrible - while on vacation I found the best mechanic ever.

My parents merc was making a weird scraping sound at times so I had a look under to see what it could be. Turns out one of the underbody plastics has come loose. Now this was 3:30PM on a friday leading up to a long weekend.

Tried ringing the Benz dealership and no answer, so googled for 'mercedes technician' and rang the first number not expecting anything. The number answered on first ring, said 'bring it in now and I'll sort it'. I was wary but limped the car over town. In that time he had moved a truck and two other cars so we could go on the hoist. Gave the three of us a coffee and 10 minutes later had everything fixed. AT NO CHARGE.

He and his shop went above and beyond and refused any offer of money.

My parents were so impressed they are now planning to drive a few hundred KM and have a weekend getaway while having his shop do the logbook servicing.

Is it ok to essentially advertise him on here by dropping the name/number etc?

Bonus is while on the vacation we mentioned it to my grandfather who has always had Mercedes. "Oh yeah, Martin. We used to drive 900km to him"

We have Barcadia here, but they didn't have that many games the last time I was there (aside from skeeball). The game side of the one in Dallas seemed more like a background than anything, though they do have a life size Jenga (which is cool as poo poo). There's another bar I used to check out occasionally that had several pinball machines, but the last couple of times I was there, they were unplugged. Staff told me they were having trouble finding anyone to maintain them (seeing as Barcadia and Free-Play have pinball machines, along with a few bowling alleys, there's obviously someone that maintains them locally - betting they just don't want to pay for it - cool bar otherwise though).

nm, wanna go halfsies on a pallet truckload warehouse of Kleenex? Allergies are kicking my rear end harder than ever this year.

You should check out the Bishop Arts Cidercade in the Design District. It has a similar set up to the Richardson Freeplay. $10 to get in, everything free and they sell good cider. It's pretty awesome.

Perhaps (hopefully) this is the first of an influx of constructed protests to bring the looming factors that we're ignoring to the forefront. We face a lot of trouble and uncertainty, and the result depends on how we all react to it.

Then again, there's the irony that it's a pop culture video bringing the topic to the table. :v:

The AC in my car took a poo poo like 3 years ago and I've just lived with it. Bought a recharge kit on clearance and gave ti a whirl. CHarge it up and when the compressor clicks on I can hear it leaking from the high pressure side. Should I futz with this repair myself or take it to be repaired? I've never used a UV dye kit to trace a leak but it looks simple enough.

Step 1: don't buy recharge kits from auto parts stores. They usually include stop-leak products in the gas, which are just as problematic in AC systems as they are in oil and cooling systems.
Since it's too late for that...

https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3616944
There doesn't appear to be a newer thread.

AC isn't really terribly complex, but it can be frustrating making stuff gas-tight. O-rings are pretty easy if that's the problem.
You really need a cheap set of gauges and a vacuum pump to service AC systems properly. Especially the vacuum pump. You'll never get it charged properly if you can't draw it down first.

Then you have some oddball places that got grandfathered. There's an old drive-in where you can order a burger and a beer to your car. Normally that's an open container violation, even if you're sitting in a parking lot (and possibly a DUI, depending on the cop - people have been popped for DUI when sleeping in their car just for having the keys within reach of them). That place used to be awesome, then the owner died and the sons took over. When pops Keller was around, there were always awesome cars and motorcycles there, daily, and it was loving packed. They officially banned motorcycles, unofficially classic cars are banned too if it looks like you may be congregating with others in the (MASSIVE) parking lot.

I made it to Keller's once on a weekend before those assholes ruined it.

It happens every year, then it fades. There's a brief uptick for the Preakness, and if the same horse doesn't win, horse racing is dead for another year.

there's no kentucky derby story that tops this one:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/clintons-derby-pick-places-second-then-euthanized/

quote:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Hillary Clinton's pick to win the Kentucky Derby this year came in second, but was later euthanized on the track. The tragic moment at Churchill Downs cast an eerie spell over the campaign and the candidate who recently compared herself and her candidacy to the only female horse running in the race, Eight Belles.

At a campaign in event recently in Jeffersonville, just north of Louisville, Kentucky, Clinton encouraged her supporters to put their money on the 20-1 long shot. "I hope that everybody will go to the derby on Saturday and place just a little money on the filly for me," she said. "I won't be able to be there this year, my daughter is going to be there and so she has strict instructions to bet on Eight Belles."

Earlier that day Clinton visited her Kentucky headquarters where a sign on the wall said "Bet on the filly." A filly is a young female horse, and no doubt Clinton saw a comparison to the horses' race and her own political race.

On the track today, Eight Belles beat the odds and eventually fought her way to place second, but was sadly put down after sustaining life threatening injuries to both of her front legs.

Man every repair job has some dumb thing, huh. Doing my intake and the fuel rail needs to come off; there's a crash bracket over it on the driver's side, and one of the bolts for that points out of the head at the firewall, and requires removing the whole cowl and wiper assembly to get a wrench on it. If that bolt was pointed up and they had an access hatch through the cowl plastic, it would shave easily 45 minutes off the job. I'm sure there's an engineering reason but it still irks me.

Thankfully I've been able to borrow my grandma's car, she shouldn't be driving anyway but my mom etc won't put a foot down so this is a good second best effort, and it lets me get around without supporting Uber. It's an Outlander, though, and somehow even more cramped inside than my MSP was; the sooner I've got my highway couch back, the better.
