Yeah I don't really expect Iran to kick anything off, if there is any thing to get kicked off.

Israel, on the other hand...

It wouldn't be the first move. Iran's going to lose in any direct conflict with Israel, so it's hard to see how attacking Israel is going to benefit them, but to be fair Israel's going to keep attacking them whether they retaliate or not.

Also,I suspect what Israel is really worried about is Iran and Syria purifying the Syrian Golans of Wahabi filth, because once that happens It will become as fortified as southern Lebanon is.

I get a sense Trump just doesn’t care about the global implications of his actions. All he cares about is looking like a tough guy domestically.

Like just where the hell do the Iran hawks expect to go with this?

What does Bibi want the US to do?

World domination? I don't know, all the tough guy measures that are coming out of the WH seem to be 'sanctions, bigglier and betterer sanctions'. If there's a game plan here it seems to hinge upon Israel going past the point of no return.

Israel fired some missiles into Syria, though it's been suggested they may have been dummy missiles designed to expose Syrian AA in preparation for a larger attack. Or they could just be a warning I guess.

They should have learned after Bush lied to invade Iraq, or after NATO under Obama got UN approval to enforce a NFZ and ceasefire in Libya then violated it and went beyond the mandate to overtly support the rebels.

Israel's escalated from bombing their proxies in Syria to bombing Iranian forces in that country directly. They're throwing punches and then acting like Iran is the bully that's trying to start a fight with them. That's not to say that Israel doesn't have any reason to be unhappy with Iranian influence on their border, but 'we don't like who our neighbor is allying with, so we're going to go ahead and attack them' isn't something we accept from a lot of other countries.

That's not true. Israeli strikes have killed a bunch of Iranians in Syria over a period of years, including some high ranking officers. They've been ranting about some impending attack and Iran staging like 80,000 troops to come for them. The energy minister even threatened that Israel was going to kill Assad. No evidence for any of this of course. The whole thing is unhinged.

Also, I'd like to point out that one of my arguments against the Iran deal was that it wouldn't prevent an escalation with Iran because Republicans were under no obligation to see out an Obummer deal. They could just pull out of it under whatever pretense they wanted if they won the presidency. While theoretically this would cancel the deal and essentially be us unfreezing billions that Iran could go on to spend murdering Syrians in exchange for nothing, the case for an Iranian desire to build nuclear weapons has always been spotty and ideological, so I'm not surprised they're gonna exploit the opportunity to present themselves as the adults in the room.

I wonder how this is going to play in Iran over the next few years. US credibility there is going to be back in the shitter, but we'll see if the regime can capitalize on it to entrench their position. Pulling out at this point definitely makes their case for them, but I'm not sure the regime has the credibility to successfully use this to get Iran to rally around them. Especially when we start talking about 2-4 years down the line. We'll see. Depending on what sanctions are imposed this might not be a complete and total disaster, but there seems to be no concern for the geopolitical implications of the US' Iran policy, so I'm not expecting any sanctions to take those implications into account either. What a mess.

I remain surprised that Russia seems so unconcerned about the rising tensions between Israel and Iran in Syria. Netanyahu just cancelled a trip to Moscow, so maybe Putin planned to weigh in there, but so far Russia's been pretty quiet as the rhetoric has been heating up and Israeli strikes have become more frequent.

The issue is that actual hostility between Israel and Russia is just not very workable, large numbers of Russians go to Israel regularly for vacation and Russian Jews make up a significant portion of the Israeli population (and they still have large numbers of relatives in Russia).

(Also, remember that Israel will accept people with Jewish mothers/grandmothers even if they essentially grew up Orthodox/secular which confuses the issue even further.)

Both sides are trying to not to get into a direct confrontation with each other because he going to fairly poisonous for them domestically.
