Even as Pizzagate type poo poo becomes more mainstream, which horrifies me, the idea that so many people believe a crazy conspiracy theory seems crazy in and of itself to those who aren't aware. What I mean is, I tried to explain Pizzagate, QAnon, crisis actors ala Parkland and Sandy Hook, Alex Jones and this whole Deep State deal to my roommate, who is a generally uninformed girl in her 20's. She watches the Bachelorette, and one of the contestants, who seems like a normal redneck type of guy, was found to have liked a bunch of MAGA poo poo on Instagram including a Parkland crisis actor picture feature David Hogg. To someone like her, from 5000 feet away, it means "he's a Trumpy guy, yuk", which is not great, but when you're talking about a picture claiming that David Hogg is an actor, it's actually way loving crazier than just liking our big dipshit old racist President. So I tried to explain what the Parkland picture actually meant. He's liking a picture that claims a victim of a school shooting is an actor. He's saying this mass shooting that is all over the news is a hoax. And likely Sandy Hook too. And so I'm explaining this whole scene to her, this world of insane ideas, and the thing is it's so crazy I can tell that she doesn't really believe there are THAT many people who believe it. To her Roseanne got fired for a racist tweet. So I tried to explain QAnon and how Roseanne has been peddling that poo poo for a while now, so it's somehow actually WORSE than racist. It's literally insane. It's so insane that it's hard for someone to absorb though. The idea that you're walking around in your day to day life surrounded by a not insignificant amount of people who actually believe that Hillary Clinton is sacrificing children and running pedophile rings and worshipping satan, is almost harder to believe than the loving conspiracy itself.

It's really amazing that people can be so convinced that this world has meaning and makes sense so everything that happens must have some tie to the overarching 'plot' of things and equally take no comfort in that. They huddle together in the dying light trying desperately to convince each other that the monsters they imagine swirl around them in the darkness will be defeated by some imaginary hero and every morning when they wake and they remain undevoured they take that as evidence that surely that hero did come and protect them as they slept because their entire sense of self is tied up in the idea that monsters are going to consume them at any second.
