Meh. If you liked the Phantom Menace, even if just for the fun visuals, it's worth it. If you're looking for a story, plot, rational decisions, etc, best to go watch The Godfather or something.

Same. As someone who got tired of Star Wars over a decade ago, The Last Jedi actually got me excited to see how this story unfolds.

Yes, the film has its flaws; the second act in particular should have gone through one more rewrite to tighten loose ends. But it was a solid film with some great moments, and it took risks in a way blockbuster films never do these days, which I feel deserves credit or a least a one watch if you're curious.

Along with Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, some other Werner Herzog films were added to Amazon Prime: Fitzcarraldo, Cobra Verde and Rescue Dawn.

Also, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is now on Amazon Prime. It's an interesting, funny, weird film that's incredibly polarizing (as is the novel that it's based on), but I like it.

Prime also recently added The Company of Wolves, which has been (relatively) hard to find the last few years. It's a 1985 werewolf folk horror film.

Other cool stuff added to Prime I haven't seen mentioned: the documentary Samsara, the neo-noir The Last Seduction, David Lynch's The Elephant Man, Roger Corman's confusing sci-fi horror Galaxy of Terror (warning, giant worm rape), and the essential B-movie Miami Connection

Yeah, I first saw it when it was on Netflix years ago and since then I've only ever seen it as a paid rental. Hard enough convincing some people to watch something when it's free.

I remember when we were talking about the Civil War doc by Ken Burns a while back, several people were put off by the static photos and felt it wasn't engaging enough. Vietnam definitely doesn't have that problem.

It came and went on Netflix for a couple of years and hasn't been back in about a year, I think. It's been on Prime for a month, and I think it was on Prime last.

Honestly, it's worth a purchase. And I don't buy movies very often.

It’s because the internet as a whole has decided they’re going to eviscerate any Star Wars movie or media project that isn’t the original theatrical OT releases or X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, regardless of actual quality.

Doubly so for all Disney-era films because .

If nerds hated Disney that much they'd also hate the Marvel movies.

It's not a conspiracy, people just don't like the Disney era Star Wars movies because they're bad.

No, I'm with you. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and I've been loving what Disney has been doing. I think the only mishap so far has been Solo, and not because it's a bad movie, but because it just wasn't necessary.

It was a lot of fun, but did we really need to know how he got his name? (it's about as dumb as you could think) Or did we need to know what C-3PO was talking about in Empire Strikes Back when he mentioned that the Millennium Falcon spoke with a peculiar dialect? No. It suffers from the problem that all prequels suffer from, is that we already know what ends up happening to these characters. There is no sense of danger for the main characters, and any side characters are ultimately unimportant because they're never mentioned in the sequels.

The nerd rage about The Last Jedi come down to 3 things really:

1) Nerd culture has become dominant, and in order to try and hold onto something that's just theirs, they are implementing nerd purity tests, and if something doesn't pass their incredibly specific purity test with flying colors, then it is actual garbage to them.

2) Sexism and racism. There is no question that there is a lot of sexism and racism out there on the internet, and it's no stranger to the nerd community. So when the Skywalker saga, which has always featured a white male as the lead, suddenly features a woman as the lead, and the majority of the second leads being people of color, racism and sexism reared its ugly head. So we now have very loud voices in the fan community denouncing Disney for using Star Wars to push a liberal agenda.

3) Specifically with The Last Jedi, they just didn't get the movie. Most of the criticisms I've seen about the movie revolved around the fact that the different storylines seemed to lead nowhere. But the whole point of the movie was to subvert expectations of what it means to be a Star Wars movie, and to flip the heroic saga on its head. It spells that out from the very first five minutes of the movie.

The Last Jedi is one of the better Star Wars movies, probably in the top 5. If you like Star Wars, go watch it.

Daisy Ridley is the least of the movie's problems and it's actually bad because it's not nearly subversive or different enough from Star Wars.

My main criticism for The Last Jedi is that the primary plot point makes no sense (spoiled as there's at least one person here who was debating watching it for the first time): the slow speed chase that takes up 80% of the movie is absurd -- how does The First Order not use its seemingly infinite resources to warp a few ships ahead of the Resistance convoy, as well as a flanking maneuver from the sides? Instead they're just content to follow along and lob shots at them hoping the shields fail or their fuel runs out? There's certainly a longer list of nitpicks that can be hand waved away but this one seems like very lazy writing.
