Sarah Hanson young and David Leyonhjelm: why do politicians like suing for defamation? 'David Leyonhjelm, having spent much of this week in and out of Parliament "slut shaming" Hanson-Young as she has described' hang on mate he actually called her an actual slut in and out of parliament and is steadfastly refusing to admit that perhaps this is a poo poo thing to do or to apologise. Then at the end of the article he just slaps on the 'if politician ever had a just cause for defamation proceedings, then she is top of the list' caveat after spending the rest of the piece talking about how people suing for defamation should think more carefully because they'll 'never get [their] reputation' back. If we're going to talk about pollies firing off frivolous defamation lawsuits, why not Clive Palmer? Or if we're talking about defamation suits making people look like a thin-skinned goose why not Alan Jones? I can understand the sentiment behind the piece but given how public cathat has been with this and how much poo poo SHY already puts up with I think it's a pretty poo poo example. It won't get cathat to shut up, sure, because he is a being of pure contrarian spite and hatred, but it does have the capacity to do something meaningful - bringing attention to the fact that female politicians put up with a lot more personal attacks and respond to them a lot less than male politicians. None of these pundits were out here calling Barnaby Joyce a slut for his actual documented infidelity that he also profited from. Just what is it about SHY, Rebel Wilson and Sophie Mirabella that makes their defamation suits invite increased scrutiny and comments about frivolity Ten Becquerels fucked around with this message at 01:29 on Jul 9, 2018 |

Ten Becquerels posted:Sarah Hanson young and David Leyonhjelm: why do politicians like suing for defamation? Yeah I took this whole thing as more of a navel gazing exercise on whether the outcomes are worthwhile more than having a crack at anyone or making a statement about women's issues. Using "slut-shaming" just struck me as quoting Hanson-Young directly since that's what she has raised as the overarching issue more than a single specific incident of him using the word slut.

I'm currently sitting in Sydney Airport because my Adelaide to Canberra work trip has turned into some all day Adl-Mel-Syd-Can ordeal. I don't know how many more in-flight raw gluten free snacks I can take.

When Liberal senator Jane Hume and Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm pass each other around Parliament, he tends to greet her with the phrase: "G'day, hot chick." She typically replies: "G'day, handsome." For Hume, a first-term senator from Victoria with a long history of advancing the cause for women in the Liberal Party, this interaction is "totally harmless". Better than that, she says, "it's fun and it makes life colourful".

Anidav posted:What if you paid teachers more rather than cut thier funding? Having specialist teachers qualified to teach a subject is an important thing. A surprising number of schools have teachers teaching out of subject for very complex subjects and its just terrible. Students either get bored, skip entire sections of the curriculum or get taught the wrong thing entirely. No wonder no one wants to pursue the subjects at a higher level.

I was under the impression that teacher rates of pay were ok these days, but the terms of employment were dogshit rolling contracts and that was making people toss their hands in the air.

I mean there are other contractual issues as well but just regarding pay levels they're still pretty poo poo.

JBP posted:Are they specialist/leading teachers? the pay is not lovely, wasn't say it was, but the lack of career progression plus the ever increasing reporting requirements and change in societal attitudes towards teachers is affecting some. and by change in societal attitudes the anecdotes i hear say there's an increasing shift on fault and blame being laid at teachers' feet when a child isn't doing well in the classroom.

Yeah that poo poo sounds horrible. My good friend teacher is over from WA now and he was saying he hasn't copped it from parents, but knows some teachers that have. Having your vocation in the paper constantly being derided as public bloat or whatever would loving kill your brain eventually.

Yep. my science degree friends from uni have moved internationally or gone on to do something unrelated. Those that are still in science, one is a high school teacher in Townsville, another does QC for oil and lubricants for barely over $50k. Last one went back to uni and has graduated commercial law.
