Sort of? She was kind of part of the pre-Scions organisation in 1.0, then after the Calamity she formed the Scions from the ashes of that. IIRC

but she wasn't a MAJOR player in 1.0

As far as the Echo goes in the story, it's rare but not unique. Our Hero has it, but so do duty finder randos when the story acknowledges they exist and some NPCs like Minfilia (and you meet a few more during the course of the MSQ). It tends to work differently for each person, aside from all Echo-havers being able to understand any spoken language and being immune to a primal's tempering.

The echo isn't immunity to tempering. That's the WoL's special crystal mama power. The echo is mostly just like fore/past sight and yeah that language thing.

Are you sure? Pretty sure the whole reason Arenvald and Fordola can help you out during the 4.1 Laksmi fight is because they have natural and artificially endowed Echo tempering immunity respectively.

Which is where that whole fringe theory comes from that the Echo is just a tempering from Hydaelyn herself.

Yeah. At this point of the story I think pretty much everyone with the Echo has the same subset of powers. Which as of Stormblood would be Postcognition, Combat Precognition, Universal Translation, See the Unseen (mostly Moogles,) Immunity to Tempering, and the ability to survive beyond death, although so far only the Warriors of Darkness and possibly the Warrior of Light have shown to be able to do so without possessing another body.

Combat Precognition was the one thing you could have thought was unique to the WoL, but both Fordola and Zenos blatantly use it in Stormblood, the former's even requiring special circumvention. If anything, the biggest variable seems to be how spread out the universal communicator part of it is, since at this point I think only Krile has shown complete universal translation- I know we sure as hell can't talk to animals.

Arguably it's Postcognition that's likely the 'unique' thing that the WoL gets. While everyone seems to have it to some degree, no one gets zonked out for it like we do :ducksiren:

That falls under Combat Precognition- your 'failure' is you seeing a future when you ignore mechanics lose the fight, and then you get to come back again to still ignore mechanics win with the knowledge of how you lost. IIRC, the Echo buff you get from failing solo duties and trials even specifically spells that out.

Encyclopedia Eorzea lists The Power to Transcend Words, The Power to Transcend Time, and The Power to Transcend Worlds as examples of the Echo's numerous powers, but suggests there are plenty more.

Speaking of Minfilia, who even is she? Why does she have the Echo? Is this stuff from 1.0?

Before the Scions came into existence at the end of the last era, they were two different groups. Louisoix headed the Circle of Knowing, a group of like-minded Sharlayan Archons who traveled to Eorzea to prevent Bahamut's Calamity. The other group was the Path of Twelve, a group headed by Minfilia meant to gather Echo users and support them in their path, as Echo users are oft thought to be akin to witches or other unholy monsters due to the lack of understanding of just what the Echo is. The first 1.0 storyline has the player character join the Path of the Twelve to help broker good relations between the beast tribe races and to help your Path Companion, who is a refugee from Ala Mhigo.

Later on it's explained that Louisoix and Minfilia meet after she begins trying to contact Sharlayan scholars to see their research on the Echo, which is how she also becomes acquainted with Krile and the Students of Baldesion, another Sharlayan sect. Their shared interests for the good of Eorzea are what prompted the groups to combine and become the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.

Interesting fact: Krile and her Echo power are a nod to the character in FFV of the same name, who was the only person able to understand and speak with moogles.

Or to level crafters. Lots of crafting leves but it uses the same pool of quests. I think you gain 4 leve allowances per day or something up to a hundred and some.

But yah if youre just doing MSQ on a single job they're not too handy.

Fun Shoe
There's honestly no point to combat leves anymore other than farming amber encased vilekin (a drop from HW leve treasure chests, used for a stage of the HW relic/anima quests). SB didn't even add any new ones, it's just crafting/gathering from there. I guess they're worth it to someone who wants the weekly challenge log XP on a combat job.

Combat leves were an option in the early days of 2.0 because there was no PotD to quickly get to 15/16 and into dungeons (and later dungeon roulettes). You had your hunting log, otherwise it was about farming fates (I have fond memories of goon "pummel parties") and running leves. On release the combat leves didn't give enough XP but they buffed that, and the escort combat leves were very popular because you could run them quickly - but SE hates fun, so the escorts got nerfed multiple times and running those leves became pointless.

Nowadays, you have multiple XP bonus options (eg. the brand new ring) so it doesn't take as long to hit low level roulette as before, and of course there's always PotD. Since the allowances are time gated (3 every 12 hours) they're mostly used for crafting and gathering, for which they're great (except for HW gathering leves I guess, the XP of those is amazingly bad :().

FFXIV's presentation is one of the biggest things, along with its story, that sets it apart from its competitors. They rarely ever skimp on quality. The thing that actually got me playing this game in the first place was watching a video of the Xande fight, and it was crazy how pumped the music got me.

WoW might be a bit restricted by its older engine, but a lot of their music is still very generic Jeremy Soule-esque stuff.

Even low level combat leves basically only exist now for the sake of ARR relic grinding and to help your OCD by giving you green checkmarks next to the ones you've done once.

If you're between level 5 and 49 and have several party members who all pick up the same leves so you can steamroll them and then turn them in rapidly, they can still be a fairly quick source of xp. If you're solo, combat leves are the least efficient way of getting fighty xp other than directly grinding on normal monsters.

It's worth noting that these were considered the signature feature of FFXIV 1.0. Yeah.
