Granted I am normally in C at EWR but is there a time when the pre-check line isn't that long? Seems pretty normal to me. If ever there was an airport Clear would clean up at it's that one.

Yeah if you have Nexus but have someone in the car who doesn't you have to go to a regular lane

If you go to the Nexus lane with a non-Nexus member they revoke your Nexus

At SEA, sometimes the Pre-check minion is a local employee and I’ve told them I have Pre and they let me through...

Pre is sometimes given out at random to flyers who the TSA thinks are low risk. Mostly it's a marketing thing. But it would surprise me much if someone who has Pre makes/is on a reservation that the TSA weighs that in the other people's favor. If it one person with a Pre escorting a party of people without then I can totally see a TSA agent loving up. As for people not getting flagged...it's the TSA. Half of their staff don't know their procedures anyway.

If someone without PreCheck is in the same booking/reservation as someone who does have it, they'll get PreCheck on their boarding pass as well, but usually they'll be flagged in the system. They can do the regular PreCheck stuff, but TSA is supposed to swab their hands for bomb juice after the metal detector.

How would they have any idea how the queue will be sorted with 2 agents checking passes/IDs and the 2 conveyor belts filtering to a single walk through metal detector?

The hand swabbing is chosen at random.

When I was traveling with a friend who didn't have PreCheck, the agent who checks boarding pass and ID handed her a giant orange card. Then after the metal detector, another agent took the card and swabbed her hands.

The physical global entry card is only supposed to be used at land crossings, and I've never even been able to do that. And it's certainly no use if you're going from the US to Canada.

I've never heard of this. I do know though that I have a nearly guaranteed success rate of getting Pre for anyone else on the same reservation as me. I assume there's some check, but it's far too consistent to be random.

This is what I'm talking about regarding Nexus / GE cards at Canadian airports: https://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/en/trusted-travellers

quote:

Simpler Screening for Trusted Travellers
Trusted Travellers sign which includes NEXUS, Global Entry, Military, Flight Crew and RAIC logos
When you arrive at the screening checkpoint:

look for the Trusted Traveller line sign;
keep your shoes, belt and light jacket on;
keep small items in your pockets; and
keep compliant liquids, aerosols and gels in carry-on bags.
In Canada, all travelers must remove laptops from carry-on bags at all CATSA checkpoints.

Trusted travellers must still comply with screening rules for prohibited items. You must still pass through a walk-through metal detector, and your carry-on items will continue to be X-rayed. You may also be required to undergo additional search procedures.

It's at the security line to get on your flight, not immigration.

Idk I usually fly through LGA. EWR bathrooms in the A30 wing are also being renovated so there were fancy portapotties set up lol. Complete shitshow.

Also I am seriously debating whether I shell out 1800 for ORD-LHR-NBO-EBB and fly almost all AA or do 1200 ORD-DOH-EBB on Qatar for 25% miles. I definitely won’t hit platinum this year if I take the latter route...

The main reason I need platinum is that I can finagle a way to get back by the next morning if flights get cancelled. You can get real creative if you overnight in DFW.

Just used 220,000 AAdvantage points, which was about 18 months of travel + card spend, to book business class tickets for wife and I from the west coast to Europe for my 40th birthday next summer. This thread motivated me to consolidate my loyalty program and points cards as much as possible - thanks y’all!

I expected some fees and taxes, but not $2k worth; getting to Japan in United was much cheaper two years ago.

Looking on track for Platinum with AA again after a hiatus of two years, and should hit Gold with Marriott for the first time, although it looks like their status is getting watered down pretty hard. It’s a long shot for me to hit Executive with National and although I don’t really rent cars much now, I have some work starting up later this year that will be more car dependent, so I might start pushing to rent more.

I’m on a regular three week rotation to the Midwest that keeps me on site for 3 days and 2 nights; add in some driving trips across Southern California in the intervening weeks and it’s about as much as I want to travel for work.

I’m not sure how KillHour has kept his sanity.

Did you book British Airways flights? BA tacks on ridiculous fuel surcharges, and passes it on to partner award travel, and London has high luxury taxes if you're connecting there in business/first class. If you can find AA award availability that work for your schedule, you'll use the same number of miles and only pay the 9/11 security fee.

E/N time: I’d be paying for it (personal travel) and I fly about 2-3 weeks a month domestically from O’Hare. We had a really slow Q1 so my segments are lower than normal and this year all to places like LGA and Kansas City so the mileage is a crap shoot. I think I’m gonna say gently caress the game and book award travel instead.

In things that the thread actually cares about I finally signed up for rewards on my Corporate AMEX ($90 and a 5 minute phone call).

It’s not the seat width/leg room that’s an issue on BA’s 787 economy seat, it’s that there is almost no padding so you feel like you’re sitting on a metal bench for 7 hours. I’d consider being one of those people that brings a huge rear end pillow if I have to fly BA’s 787 in economy again.

Also, what’s up with United today? Woke up at 0400 to get to the airport for my flight and already got a notification that it’s delayed by three hours which means my connection is already pre-hosed and I’m not getting to Seattle on time.

gently caress everyone at that airline with a rusty loving dildo. I should post the screenshots of the Twitter support rep telling me my best chance was to charm the airport reps into helping me out the last time they hosed me (only a month ago!)
