It's kinda important to say that this "backpedalling" from Bolsonaro is most probably pre-planned. It's not a reaction to the backlash, it's a way to look like they're compromising while actually getting the poo poo they wanted from the get-go to happen. Rio Grande do Sul's governor, Sartori, played that game for the last 4 years here:

"Hey i'mma sell every single state company including our bank"
"what no"
"i was kidding i'm just selling this one thing and a bunch of that bank's shares"
"ah ok"

It also helps him deflect criticism, because every time you try to tell someone that Bolsonaro just proposed something really, REALLY stupid, it turns out that it was fake news, you fool. You goddamn idiot.

Our new foreign minister is gonna be a guy who writes that "only Trump can save western civilization" and believes that "globalism is globalization driven by cultural marxism"

Come to think of it, I know monarchy is an anachronistic concept in 2018, but how are the emperors of Brazil remembered in the national memory? Apart from being a fetish for reactionary bedwetters and psychopaths ofc

it's an explicitly white supremacist perspective. did you think stuff like that in 2005? did anyone who isn't a fascist deep down?

e: also, there are plenty of self-described libertarians who are pro-immigration, because driving down wages and worsening working conditions is obviously good for capital. Glenn however, even when he was a "libertarian" was squarely in the Paleocon wing of the libertarian movement. his opposition to american intervention and the american security state or deep state or whatever you want to call it, is rooted in his Paleocon worldview, much like cucker carlson

The funny thing is pretending that that passage by Greenwald is some deeply hidden secret, when the reality is that he was the one who put it up, along with his disavowal of his former positions and explanation for how he changed his mind. Even at his worse, he is far more transparent and thoughtful than the people who are still made he shattered their image of benevolent empire.

anyone familiar with his writing can see Greenwald’s foreign policy views come from leftist anti-imperialism and not paleocon bullshit

if i could put forth a criticism of Greenwald it would be how much he cribs from and quotes Chomsky, noted paleocon

It's been incredibly lucrative for him. there are other critics of the american security state and american empire who have lost their lives or their freedom doing the same thing. a couple of his former sources come to mind lol. most journalists don't get the kind of cultural cachet he does, nevermind enjoy the kind of job security or lifestyle he does.

It seems to me that nations that have had a right wing turn in government are fueled by a "lost promised future".

America with the failing of the American dream.

Hungary with underwhelming post Communist success.

Is this the same case with Brazil?

You could say that, Brazil at one point peaked as the world's 5th biggest GDP, but then we had a recession and things have gone pretty poorly since.
