But Lord Worm is a huge part of why it's so great. I mean it's amazing instrumentally but he ties it altogether in a way their other vocalists are not capable of.

Man they just don't know what people want from them do they. Neither to Dream Theater, who's new single is equally eh.

What is NOT eh is the new single from Soen, which is an extremely late VICTOR in the "best music video of 2018" contest:

NSV is basically perfect, yeah.

Somebody mentioned wanting more death metal with shouty vocals a while back. Obliteration should scratch that itch, shouty unintelligible punk-ish vocals.

Saw Metallica on Friday in Sacramento. I was in the upper deck because gently caress paying $450. Either the acoustics of the building were bad or the mix was bad. The vocals were super drowned out by everything else, and even during James talking between songs, I had no clue what he was saying. Good, entertaining show, but goddamn the sound was awful. Super disappointing.

At least my daughter loves her $10 knockoff parking deck shirt :3:

Anyone else go to Hospital Fest yesterday?

It was a great lineup that went from noon to 5am. Power Trip with Igor Calavera on drums and Prurient supplying the power electronics made for a powerful performance. There was a lot of noise, Merzbow and Linecraft both had good sets but sadly I misssd Black Leather Jesus.

Godflesh members played four sets! Benny debuted his side project VITRIOL, then Jesu, Final, and a late night Justin dj set of classics like Crass, Discharge, and Amebix. He was psyched to blast those old tracks and shouted along with the lyrics.

The last year has been unbelievable for Godflesh appearances!

I'm usually having a hard time discerning sludge from stoner stuff, but here are some which I think stand out a lot

slow ones, more like stoner metal but also sludge:
"Shrinebuilder" is a very loved album
"Primitive and Deadly", by Earth

faster ones, actual sludge:
"Snakes for the Divine", by High on Fire
"Almost Heathen", by Karma to Burn
"Gods of the Earth", by The Sword

The Sword is definitely not actual sludge. They are as regular a stoner band as it gets. It’s a really broad term these days but what it’s supposed to mean is a mixture of doom metal and hardcore.

Welp yeah, I also wanted to include Welcome to Sky Valley as the most iconic non-Black Sabbath stoner album ever made, but eh. Why is sludge even a thing, can't we call everything stoner/doom and be happy?

SLudge ought to be the most redundant genre of music to exist since grunge :P

I mean, I enjoy the music a lot, but why they had to call it something else other than Stoner Metal is beyond me

That’s a pretty accurate description of Sky Valley imo.

Sludge exists as a separate genre because there are worlds of difference between stoner/doom and stuff like Iron Monkey or Acid Bath, and then even more when you get into “atmospheric sludge” like Neurosis and ISIS. I’m not sure when it broke down into “anything super heavy that’s not death/black metal and also early Melvins records for some reason” beyond it being a useful adjective.

I try not to be too much of a genre pedant these days or encourage the thread to descend into it so apologies for chiming in.
