Yeah well... about surviving that crash.

The fuel tank was thin walled aluminium that partially went under the front seats. And the transmission was not that far away. And also so was the engine. And you were surrounded by composites. With a lot of magnesium ... like the gearbox ...... that was right next to you.

And these cars got REALLY hot.

Have I painted the picture well enough just how lethal a S4 would be in a big crash?

Well the crash that killed Group B was an S4 and basically Henri Toivonen's S4 exploded when it crashed and the fuel tank was split..... given all the composites and magnesium it would have been impossible to get out fast enough. The crash was probably survivable otherwise but still, by the time anyone got to the wreck all that was left was a space frame and some piles of ash where the driver and co-driver had died.

Not that other Group B cars were any better

(Warning - co-driver died)

and all that asbestos didn't save them?

but seriously, as much as I love the insanity of group B, I'm glad we have much safer motorsport. I would be MUCH more excited if we saw mid engine/2wd/kei cars and other weirdness come back.

The new WRC cars are Group B reborn. Plus now there is a huge allowance for National cars and other piggyback events that follw the main WRC field. Thence at Coffs Harbour WRC you saw -

A dozen wild winged WRC

Dozen odd WRC2, usually Skodas

National ARC (STI/EVO, Fiestas etc)

Commodore VE V8

Bone stock BA Falcon (Just add roll cage, even was a single spinner diff. Even had an auto)

Datto 180 SS

Mk II Escorts

Commodore V8 UTE

Audi S1 (As in Group B car)

So I mean...... how much weirder and more variety does anyone need? Let alone the huge allowance now for G4 cars that you can build some real oddballs and gain entry under national waivers - that certain AWD BRZ is WRC legal with the waiver. The real problem is the crowds and wider fanbase turned off because of S.Loeb and Citroen's immense budgets = no real cometition + not particularly interesting cars. Thats not the case anymore

France has interesting regulations too. They have Group F: obsolete cars with expired homologations can be turned into one-off prototypes

They have group T (AFAICT, unrelated to the FIA class of the same name), a silhouette dune buggy class. You probably remember Vincent Foucart's rotary-powered weedwacker:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHnkqAxLjaY

In Italy, we have the Ape Proto class: three-wheeled prototypes with a Piaggio Ape front, a custom back and a motorcycle engine. They have their own races but they're sometimes invited to stage rallies as "exhibition" entries

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3AawCkNpWs

However, I doubt we'll ever get back to the levels of craziness of the seventies, where rallies accepted group 5 entries, usually kit buggies:

(race officials couldn't find any documentation on this thing - no wonder - and the manufacturer had to make it up on the fly. DNF)

(2nd place overall!)

... but in some special events, real actual honest-to-god group 5 track cars

I didn't know about the Group 5 rally cars, and went looking for info. i found this pretty cool article on the Stratos Turbo in the automotive Giro d'Italia.

Mind you, the "road legality" of the Giro d'Italia group 5 cars consisted in bolted-on headlights and "test drive" plates. A little like how the Targa Florio didn't officially have a practice day, so teams just made their race cars "road legal" for a day... to practice the course in the middle of regular traffic:

Could be a cool raspberry pi project to aim your side mirrors directly into the face of whoever's behind you. Hard part is figuring out where their eyes are, from there it's relatively easy math to reflect their own headlights at that spot.

My big problem is the side mirrors, personally. Can't really flip em like the rearview, and some lights that don't reach the latter are still aimed high enough to glare off the sides.

I need to install a retroreflector sign on my rear shelf that says "IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU'RE AN rear end in a top hat"

The dimmer switch on my 987 rearview dims the side mirrors as well :iia:

If the car behind you's headlights are in your sideview mirrors you might have your sideview mirrors adjusted too far inward. Most people do.

Not to say it doesn't happen, but sideview mirror glare is a problem I rarely have in my low-slung car. The rearview mirror, yes, but thankfully it auto-dims.

This is an amazing feature and really useful for passengers in particular. As stated with properly adjusted side mirrors you should not be getting blinded by anyone directly behind you, it's only on multi lane roads with one of those assholes sitting in the lane next to you that the dimmed side mirrors help the driver. Although it's like that's an extreme edge case, just not as common as the prick being directly behind you.

I was just reminded, upon seeing a much shittier upside-down-suv-being-attacked-by-a-monster scene because the Goosebumps movie was on TV, that I saw a perfectly accurate Jurassic Park Ford Explorer a few weeks ago. Vista Cruiser roof and all. It was in the TX/LA border town of Waskom, TX on US80. Sadly, no photo (it was going the other way, I only saw it long enough to say "Holy poo poo, Jurassic Park Explorer!" and there person I was riding shotgun with only saw it in the mirror) and I didn't see the plates, but did somebody in Texas or Louisiana buy a movie prop, or did they outdo Boomerjinks in recreating a JP car?

Edit: Probably this guy.

Doesn't seem like a lot of people are noticing that machine learning is going to change an awful lot of design. It isn't going to be too long where a computer just spits out brand new music, art, design, porn.
Kind of like some sort of post-scarcity society but only with digital 'goods'.
