I think the whole balance between work life and academic life was more what the foster-parents were projecting onto the situation. He only died after Kawakami stopped tutoring him, and her guilt over giving up on him was then twisted and used to blame her for the sole purpose of extortion. At least, that's how I interpreted things.

Dumb personal opinion but Chie actually has pretty good romance scenes. Rise is okay. Naoto is eh. Yukiko is forgettable.

Chie has the best personality out of any of the female romance options and I think by extension has the best S-link. Her route doesn't start until after you hear her thoughts about Yukiko and from there she's not really sure how to better herself, she just knows she should somehow. She's the only character in the game with real hobbies outside of Kanji. So, when she asks you to train with her, it starts off as being karate stuff because that's really all she knows, and she thinks that fighting is strength because that's also something reinforced by gameplay in the TV - if she can kick things good, she's strong and can protect people. The development from there is cool because there's actually some sort of development between the main character and Chie. In almost every other social link you're just there to say "yes I believe in u" every time you have the option to talk and just let the other person monologue at you. Chie has to sort of grow up past her misguided attempts at betterment twice - first when the other guy confronts her about still being childish despite all her training, and then again when a group of guys literally threaten to go to Yukiko's house and beat her up (which is hosed up). Chie's growth inherently involves other people, which is why it's a good social link/romance path, because it's one that the MC actually plays an integral role in.

It sucks that once Rise joins the party she's basically relegated to comic relief duty

Also the voice actress for Chie gets grief, but she absolutely nailed the Valentine's Day rejection scene. It's brutal with Chie. You hear every bit of confidence that she had up to that point go away in awkward sadness.

like naoto clearly wants to wear female clothing but the emphasis should be on the protag helping her get the confidence to do that but the emphasis in those scenes feels way more on making her girly so you can date her. like there's no scene of them discussing the ins and outs of it or them at a clothing store with her nervously asking the protag for advice or anything, the scene at the end of her putting on the girl's school uniform is treated as her giving you a 'reward' or 'present,' or something, its treated like a pleasant surprise and the emphasis is on if you, the player, like it

How do you translate a joke that is based on the fact the word looks like something written in Japanese without either copious footnotes (which wouldn't work very well in a game) or just making a regular ol' pun?

I think the hardest stuff to translate is probably just the stuff that'd be implied by learned cultural history

like they're translating Night in the Woods into Japanese and I'm still wondering how the hell you'd get across the bit that a) the game clearly takes place in Fake Pennsylvania, even though this is never explicated and only implied by all the dutch-sounding names everywhere, and b) the cultural connotations of rural Pennsylvania and post-industrial America which are also never explicated but are tremendously important to the story

Chie's Valentine's Date is especially touching. She's like 'okay, you had a choice between the idol, the super detective and the platonic ideal of the yamato nadeshiko aside from her hyena laughing and you picked me' and she can hardly believe it.

Yeah, you specifically get that bit if you tell her 'I like your voice higher' which, geez game. Let Naoto dress how she wants. You've already made very clear in that terrible public health scene that she's got the biggest boobs of the girls. It's just framed strictly for Yu's pleasure and ugh.

When I played the game I started off liking Yukiko the most but ended up romancing Marie because I love everything about her.

But apart from her, I definitely ended up liking Chie more than Yukiko by the end. Dunno which version you all are talking about but Erin Fitzgerald in P4G is the voice of Chie for me and she nailed it. She's always been really great in my experience.

Rise was probably my least favorite.

Yeah, it's weird going back to the first game and Chie's original dub actress. She's not really bad, but she sounds almost too mature for the role.

She is cool, just not my favorite. I like everybody in P4, even Teddie.

Although I think my friends in SMTIVA were even better. Navarre is way better than Teddie or Morgana as Team Mascot. They salvaged the most worthless character from SMTIV and made him good.

I also would have dated Yosuke if I could have. I've heard there is some evidence in the game thet you wer supposed to.

Plus the whole idea that he's closeted is really interesting and helps him a lot.

yeah, there’s some cut lines with some romantic implications. It’s sad that we never got those, because it would have made him the most interesting romance in the game and certainly a change up from a pack of bland girls who just cry when you pretend not to notice their crushes on you.

For better or for worse Yosuke has one of the most dynamic personalities in the game, and it’s a shame they didn’t take advantage of that.

There's some voice clips left in the files of clips of him saying something that sounds romantic, but there's zero context for them.

There's possibilities like maybe there was supposed to be a girl option at some point, too. Iunno, I lean towards the 'cut gay route or at least heavily implied best buds option' interpretation too, but if anyone tells you that, objectively, yosuke had a gay route that was cut, they're lying. There's no way of knowing what it was meant to be.

not that i'm entirely in disagreement, but i think the SA perspective of Futaba being undateably reliant on Joker to overcome her trauma is probably grounded in our relatively well-adjusted mid-twenties to late thirties perspective.

a teenage or young adult fan of persona, particularly one with similar social stunting or a background leaning towards the outcast would probably see it drastically differently, which is kind of who i see futaba catering to.

I dated Ann because P5 was the first Persona game I played so I didn't realize that choosing to hug my friend who was clearly having a bad time and needed some comfort meant "We're dating now"

But then I realized that that ruins all of Morgana's hopes and dreams so I was fine with it

Doesn't P5 give you a big "this action will start a relationship with this character" notice before doing that?

IIRC, Rise in P4's bawling her eyes out and your options are to comfort her and kickstart a romantic relationship with her, or just leave the room.

I finished the game. The last dungeon/boss was rough with me stupidly failing to make SP items beforehand but the ending was really satisfying. Thor got me through to the end but my favorite pokemon persona throughout was a tie between Black Frost and my friend Hell Biker.

The political commentary or whatever definitely petered out into nothing but just as a "beat the big rear end in a top hat behind everything" ending it was still really well done, even if they were trying for something more than that.

I had a few non-party social links at 10 by the end and I honestly want to play again just to see what happens when you have everyone.
