Adam Johnson made a good summary of how a bunch of mainstream American news outlets recently ran a really lovely quasi-white nationalist story about the government shut down and prisons.

axeil posted:it doesn't matter if she voted no or voted present and people in this forum get way too wrapped up in symbolic things. i guarantee her constituents in alaska didn't care. Yes it does. The reason she voted present was so that McConnell didn't have to postpone the vote by two days until Daines got back from his daughter's wedding, for fear of more evidence coming out and potentially losing more support. If her anti-rapist principles don't even extend as far as "putting even the slightest road hump in the way of a rapist judge" then they are purely political theatre. She took a hall pass and was permitted to vote present for political gain in exchange for not offering any tangible opposition. How often do politicians have to do this over and over, and even say they do things like this before we can identify patterns? Since when in the hell have Republican senators of all people had any principles at all?

Yeah it's mostly a matter of her not being afraid of being primaried by the tea party wackadoos because they have already tried and failed. Also she's from Alaska and I think that it is worth remembering that it's the only state in the union that actually has a UBI pathetic as it may be speaks to a different cultural understanding of the role of government than exists in the rest of the country. That said the "there are no good Republicans" stands it's just that some are objectively worse than others.

It would cost a lot and we’d have to build a lot of drones and hire a lot of agents, but it seems like it would be more viable than a thing that could bypassed by a loving welder’s kit.
