Adam Johnson made a good summary of how a bunch of mainstream American news outlets recently ran a really lovely quasi-white nationalist story about the government shut down and prisons.

Yes, but I thought that she'd be a lock to vote actively no on Kavanaugh because of those native tribes... so, you know, I actually kind of want to retract my previous post, because that "present" bullshit sure was cowardly.

Iirc, it was the Alaskan native tribes that put in a lot of efforts to get her to win by write-in when she lost the Republican primary. They are part of her constituents.

Dems really just need to have a backbone and say outright that the "GOP wants to kill you" in every advertisement. Straight up just have some soccer mom named Karen show up in an ad and say "I was just about to take my four loving children to practice, but instead I died from the carrot and celery sticks I packed for their snack because the GOP cut funding to protect the quality of our food".

Yes it does.

The reason she voted present was so that McConnell didn't have to postpone the vote by two days until Daines got back from his daughter's wedding, for fear of more evidence coming out and potentially losing more support.

If her anti-rapist principles don't even extend as far as "putting even the slightest road hump in the way of a rapist judge" then they are purely political theatre. She took a hall pass and was permitted to vote present for political gain in exchange for not offering any tangible opposition.

How often do politicians have to do this over and over, and even say they do things like this before we can identify patterns? Since when in the hell have Republican senators of all people had any principles at all?

This was why I had assumed the thing I had assumed. I certainly can't speak for those tribes, since I'm not Alaskan, native, or a Republican, but they really put in a lot of work for her, and she's been very vocal about supporting things that matter to them in other areas, but then she symbolically flipped them off with Kavanaugh given his specifically anti-Native opinions.

But that's enough of me pooping up the news thread. Sorry all.

Not really. Manchin will never actually be the deciding vote on anything that hurts the Democrats. He stays quiet, and then casts a chud vote the minute Chuck Schumer tells him that his vote no longer matters and there is no way the Democrats can win.

I'm pretty sure Murkowski actually was the deciding vote that killed the GOP's effort to repeal the ACA.

Yeah it's mostly a matter of her not being afraid of being primaried by the tea party wackadoos because they have already tried and failed. Also she's from Alaska and I think that it is worth remembering that it's the only state in the union that actually has a UBI pathetic as it may be speaks to a different cultural understanding of the role of government than exists in the rest of the country.

That said the "there are no good Republicans" stands it's just that some are objectively worse than others.

gently caress a wall, but wouldn’t it be theoretically more plausible and effective to build an invisible fence sensor type deal, have a gently caress ton of drones patrol it and send out actual agents to investigate alarms?

It would cost a lot and we’d have to build a lot of drones and hire a lot of agents, but it seems like it would be more viable than a thing that could bypassed by a loving welder’s kit.

50 billion dollars would buy a lot of extra agents and surveillance to shore up the border. Unless you’re gonna have the stupid rear end wall manned by agents who have orders to kill anyone with a blowtorch, it makes no goddamn sense. It’s the IRL version of an Imperial AT-AT being brought down by a cheap rear end tow cable.
