as someone who does taxes I think I know what he’s on about. mortgage interest deduction can take you above the standard deduction amount, so this year, when it’s capped at 10k, he might have taken the standard deduction instead, which could have ended up increasing the amount of his income that is taxable and therefore raising his total tax owed. especially if he had a lot of SALT/interest and he was deducting like $20k in prior years and now is on the standard deduction which is only $12k. (assuming filing single)

Which is dumb as hell, obviously, but imagine a society where someone fires into a crowd, and hundreds of people all pull guns and start firing blindly at wherever they think the fire is coming from.

The two biggest ways people are getting hosed on their taxes are: 1. High SALT which now caps at $10,000. A Californian homeowner might hit this cap just in property taxes on a 1200 square foot shithole house and that’s before they pay tens of thousands of no longer deductible state income tax. and even though CA is very blue it’s still like 37% chud which means tens of millions of chuds. 2. Loss of the personal exemption. If you have 22k in itemized poo poo for a married couple you got to add $4050 each resulting in 30k worth of deductions. Now that 4050 is just gone and you get to deduct the standard, 24k, so you just lost 6k worth of deductions which is ~1500 in taxes at 24% marginal tax rate. bird with big dick has issued a correction as of 20:31 on Feb 11, 2019 |
