The industry he's in is suffering from people coming in who are already wealthy from other things and undercutting on pricing while also having fancier stores. The American Dream.

Jurgan posted:See, I have a problem with blaming employers for doing what’s legal and not going above and beyond. It’s a shaming tactic that feels good in the moment, but it does nothing to actually improve the situation. If the minimum wage is not livable, the answer is to raise the minimum wage, not to yell at people who pay it. Maybe you can get a couple employers to pay better, but the majority will always pay as little as they can get away with. I was talking about minimum wage as it is in the US right now, which is not a living wage in most of the country. Obviously we should raise the minimum wage. But, as of the time I am making this post, that is not happening. Owning a business isn't a right. If you can't afford labor, you can't afford a business. It's legal to yell racial slurs at people, but that doesn't make it a good thing to do.

He could have made her something or given her whatever the nine year old equivalent of a nice back rub is. Like, there are plenty of acceptable socialist ways to participate in Valentine's Day and show your appreciation to your partner/s of choice. "It's an outdated heterosexist mating ritual" is a much better reason to weasel out of going on a nice date together to the state botanic gardens.

Lol, an almost literal pee-pee doo-doo he's a bad president. You know, it bears repeating, but kids of that age happily parrot whatever their parents teach them. It's not like the child learned about capitalism, and extrapolated from that that Valentine's is consumerism nonsense. At some point he was literally told by his mum that Valentine's is consumerism nonsense. If his mum taught him that taxation is theft, he would say that at school, too. Wait until the kid is 14, though. Thanks to youtube algorithms, he's going to start watching Ben Shapiro and will DESTROY his COMMUNIST mum with FACTS. 9yo's can and do say that sort of poo poo, I'd believe it. The school I teach at had a 9yo who organised a women's march last in response to something that happened. It was mostly just attended by her friends, but still. They very much take their cues from the adults in their lives still, but a lot of 9yo's can understand (superficially) and are interested politics and political issues - to the point of repeating the sort of stuff their teachers and parents tell them at least voiceless anal fricative has a new favorite as of 20:18 on Feb 14, 2019 |

That report came out that you absolutely can't afford even the shittiest two bedroom apartment on minimum wage anywhere in America. Even poverty-stricken hellholes where you're lucky if you can get 40 hours a week at minimum wage it isn't a living wage. You can maybe scrape by but it's always on a financial knife edge pretty much no matter what you do.

Yeah I doubt there are (m)any 9yo's who have a deep understanding of late capitalism, but 9yo's don't have a deep understanding of much at all. That's why they aren't able to provide informed consent to anything and why they aren't treated like full people by the law and poo poo. But "blind consumerism [buying poo poo for the sake of buying poo poo] is bad" is a simple thing to understand even for a 9yo and when you relate it to environmental degradation and global warming they get it pretty quickly and easily.

I think you're getting at the real issue- the point of this thread is in many ways less "did it happen" than "what is this person trying to prove by claiming it happened?" Children say a lot of poo poo, some of it makes sense and a lot of it doesn't. But a ton of people have this romanticized "from the mouths of babes" view where children stating your political opinions gives them extra validation. Children can appreciate some broad principles of morality- "people are more important than things," "stealing is bad," "you shouldn't be mean to people who are different"- but actually running a society tends to be more complicated. Showing a kid saying something doesn't necessarily mean "this is so obvious even a child can get it." It could easily mean "this child doesn't understand enough to appreciate what they're saying."

I think it's more simply that they are just parroting the kind of things they hear their parents say, which is only reinforced when they freak out with excitement and say "hold on Kaydyanne, let me get my phone...now say that again so I can tweet you and make you go viral". They are conditioning their kids to say woke things, and if you aren't cynical it's with the hope that they become progressive later in life when they actually understand it, but I think we all know it's really all about the likes/retweets and nothing else.

My favorite part is how they always cycle from "It's so simple, a child could get it" to "Well, not any child, just mine because they're the smartest and wokest."

The sad part for me is that the kind of people that post the "My child just totally destroyed the heteronormative society in which we live. Take that patriachy!" etc. don't seem to know or understand kids, let alone their own kid. They are using them to make a point on the internet. Let me repeat, they are using their own flesh and blood to make a point to strangers. And that woman above is not only doing that, but forcing the kid to come on to prove these strangers wrong. i.e. "Come to mommy little Kaylene, I need you to repeat this on camera so people I have never met and will never meet will stop thinking they are better than me."
