A book I read about a Russia defector in the mid-70’s talked a lot about alcoholism in the Soviet Union. To the extent that the lack of it in the US (in comparison) was as shocking as the fully stocked grocery stores. Russia keeps flirting with increasing the retirement age. I think the life expectancy is 62 and they want to increase the retirement age from 60 to 65. And that’s with an infant mortality rate not too much worse than other Western nations. So huge numbers of men really are dying in their early 60’s.

Bizarrely, I think Putin's recent 'compromise' was to increase it for men but not for women. So your chances of reaching retirement as a man are not great. I guess that's one way of balancing the budget.

In one of the STALKER games, might have been a mod or the regular game, can't remember, there was a story you could follow to a "stalker's retirement fund". It apparently had enough value in gear and money to last you the rest of your life. A bottle of vodka, a pistol, and a single bullet

It's not like saving your money to buy a big-screen TV or a nice stereo system or an NES was an option for most people. Vodka it is, then, gotta do something with your weekends.

Russians drink on the job. But yes, you had a situation where you could wait years for a lovely apartment or car. Drinking was cheap and it was communal so that's what men did. In the Russian air force, they'd drink the pure alcohol that was meant to deice or cool advanced jet components.

The whole blue line craze grew out of #bluelivesmatter which was supposed to go against #blacklivesmatter, a movement that started on calling out police for shooting too many minorities. Coincidentally, the only people I see promoting this stuff are white, and have very cool opinions of everyone who isn't.

The blue line thing was way before #bluelivesmatter, it stems from the phrase "The thin blue line" which has been in use since the 50's or so. Cops have used those black flags with a single horizontal blue line as a "Hey I'm a cop too" (aka don't pull me over) sticker for a while. However, not to come off as a completely contrary dick, you are correct that the usage of the blue line for non family members to support cops as well as the american flag with the blue line definitely coincides with the #blacklivesmatter issues. Sources: My brother is a cop and has had one of those black and blue license plates for at least 10 years or so.

A milk store? Literally, earlier this week in another thread someone accidentally said "burger shop". Now I'm imagining a strip mall where all the stores are single product shops where you go from the milk store to the tomato shop and so on to get your breakfast. jojoinnit has a new favorite as of 17:20 on Feb 14, 2019 |

Pastry of the Year posted:you wanna know some insanely insecure tacticool poo poo? there's a "thin yellow line" variant of those flags and Punisher skulls for rent-a-cops and "loss prevention officers" hello friends, Last year I made the decision to trust my life on the street to Second Chance body armor. I got the level IIa because it stops the most rounds. plus I got the Trauma Plate for the front. What scares me is that, although I can fit an extra trauma plate in the front, I cannot fit a second one in back. As of late I have taken to duct-taping a second trauma plate to the area of my back where the heart and vital organs are located. Then I put my vest on. Here is the questions. The ducttape solution, although tactically sound, is hot and painful to remove. I would like to go to the single-plate solution in back. What I am worried about is repeated hits to that area with .308 ammunition. I have a high-risk security job and I fear that I would be the target for repeated long-distance shots to my back. Are any of you aware of a thicker plate that could stop, say, .338 Lapua or something like that? Is there a better way to do the second plate? BTW, I am, of course, usually carrying a pair of ceramic plates in my briefcase so that I can shield my head. My SO (we work as a team when necessary) has a similar accessory containing a breakdown NEF single-shot 300 WinMag with an 18" bbl. The plan is that I shield us with my body and “catch the rounds” while she assembles the NEF. I lay down covering fire with my 23 (Bar-Sto .357 Sig barrel) and she makes the long shots. I will then throw smoke grenades to obscure the area while continuing to lay covering fire. The problem, of course, is when I have to turn my back to run, and then the problem crops up. Thanks!
