ToxicSlurpee posted:There are interpretations that they were basically loving anything a dick would fit in while trying to expand that definition as far as possible. I've seen people saying that meant a lot of bestiality and pedophilia. If you go by that interpretation the gay shenanigans weren't the problem at all but rather the fact that they were lustfully loving absolutely everything all the time. Even then the sin wasn't any specific act but lust in and of itself. Incidentally the modern definition of lust doesn't match the historical one used to define the sins way back when; lust didn't just apply to sex. A lot of the original meaning got lost in translation. It's very important to remember that the KJV isn't even one specific version and is also like seven languages removed from the original Hebrew. For example on lust, one of the common Latin translations of the deadly sin lists it as 'luxuria', which means exactly what you'd think.

They want a revolution but they want other people to do it, they want those other people to act en masse, and they want those other people to"win" so they can latch onto that "win" like a sports team fan.

It's one of the commonest recurring Freeper themes - why oh why aren't OTHER PEOPLE rising up and overthrowing the deep state (or whatever today's bugaboo happens to be). They're always so appalled that one million patriots haven't marched on the capital to support Donald Trump/turf Robert Mueller out of his office/execute Nancy Pelosi for crimes against the people., or why the military hasn't already launched a coup and murdered all their political enemies. There's a slightly milder form of it where they assure each other that THIS bit of (usually fake) news will be the trigger that sends a million people into the streets and wipes out the liberals for good, that THIS is the last straw and true patriotic Americans are finally, finally going to strike back. It's just a perfect mixture of impotence, wishcasting, and laziness. Freepers are "idea men" down to their cores.

Hell I watched a video yesterday of two nutters bitching how the younger generation is turning to socialism because they see all these self made rich guys and they can't have that but that both sides need to talk it out and if it just so happens those younger generations don't listen the older ones will have to murder them all. I dared to leave a comment about discourse being near impossible because they've already made up their minds what the issue is and all they choose to do is meet any complaints with hate and vitrol. The response? A mass of replies about me being a dumb commie loser that wants everything given to me. SocketWrench fucked around with this message at 19:00 on Feb 28, 2019 |

ToxicSlurpee posted:The original teaching was basically asceticism; the ideal was that you would live as simply as possible and indulge in as few pleasures as possible so you could maximize your service to God. There was absolutely no way you'd ever be perfect about it so what Jesus taught was that you should do the absolute best you can and then apologize when you inevitably gently caress up along the way. Once again evangelicals hosed things up by setting a minimum bar that in some denominations just kept getting higher and higher. This is why you get congregations of like 20 people meeting in a garage that believe that absolutely everybody else is going to Hell. Except that it only gets higher for people they dislike. For their political allies, the bar keeps getting lower. Hence the same people who impeached Bill Clinton for getting a blowjob think Donald Trump was ordained by God to be president. ToxicSlurpee posted:I think some of that was that Catholic priests were always supposed to be celibate but it was never made a hard and fast rule until that point. Like they weren't supposed to own property or have titles either but the various popes just didn't give a crap. When really immoral priests started showing up or half assing tending their congregations a pope said "knock this poo poo right the gently caress off." I heard once that the real reason priests weren't allowed to marry was less about being devoted solely to Christ and more that they were worried the papacy would become a hereditary monarchy. I don't know how true that is, but it seems plausible.

Lewensky says it was consensual, but we really shouldn't be ignoring the fact that the loving President of the United States being sexually serviced by an intern could not possibly be anything other than command rape. Also, he was impeached for lying to Congress, rather than for sexual impropriety.
