Guavanaut posted:Well, the calculation is "do you have a NI number? y/n" which is different to existing, and one that is already used for current benefits. Everyone who’s ever worked in the UK has an NI number. Going to pay this to everyone who’s done a few bar shifts on a working holiday, and every temp agricultural worker when they’re both long gone from the UK and not coming back?

.5% of the £96 billion annual pension budget would actually be enough to buy a squadron of F35s ($96 million each), so I don’t think it counts as petty cash. Plus costs to develop a new system, rather than just keep one running, would presumably be several times that. Of course the real issue with any of these UBI-lite scheme are the way they privelege inherited capital over earnt income. They are great for people with trust funds, or in early retirement, who have no need for anything as proletarian as a job. And neutral or negative for those who lack inherited or accumulated wealth. One day, the world will be a classless society of aristocrats. Everyone will have equally massive wealth by right, and will be free to pursue the hobbies that interest them without financial reward. The trick is getting to there from here; its not like it can be done by simply gradually expanding the number of life peerages awarded each year.

It's quite interesting because I suppose what we have here is an almost dual class system - the 'British class system' which is all culture and breeding and borderline feudal in character, and the more precisely defined Marxist notion. They're related though separate concepts, and I often feel that one of the major problems we have in British discourse is that we never clearly distinguish between them, so debate often becomes a load of people talking past each other.
