My last job was working on the loading docks for a delivery company and man, those guys were just constantly getting turbofucked. The company touted a base compensation of somewhere between 40-50k/year but when you factor in having to provide and maintain your own vehicle, meaning gas, insurance, repairs, etc, having to buy your own health insurance and so forth, most were making minimum wage and a few were making even less than that. A handful were able to stick with it and make a living somehow. Probably 70% of the drivers for that company were being churned every year. This was for a place that mostly transported pharmaceuticals and, I dunno, I'd always just assumed that when you're transporting things like that, where you might have tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of product, maybe you'd want a stable work force? Maybe guys who can afford vans that aren't constantly breaking down? But what the hell do I know?

My uncle was a trucker for years and it ruined his health. Back during the 70's and 80's it was still a poo poo job but you could make a living at it and feed a family of four as long as you didn't mind missing a lot of birthdays and ballgames. Now you don't even get the money so it's just sheer desperation outside of a rarefied sliver of the workforce who do specialized hauling.

The country getting assfucked by withholding is just going to get worse over the next few years. The GOP sort of counted on explosive growth to make up for it but 70% of Americans are still sucking poo poo through a straw and it's just going to keep being awful.

There's a truck driving school near my workplace, but they apparently don't do nearly enough parking lot training before putting them on two-lane office park roads because it's a normal occurrence in the work day for them to stall for as long as 5 red lights before they finally manage to get in gear and make a turn. Occasionally they'll run off the road or crash into a sign. I've only ever seen one of them do so badly that his instructor kicked him out of the truck and made him walk back to the school as he painstakingly pulled the truck out of the grass and off the pipes.
