pseudanonymous posted:Farming is one of those things where there's definitely money to be made in it, but most of the money to be made is being made by huge corporations. Individual farmers are basically just running out the clock, and most of them would be better off, economically speaking, selling the land and investing the proceeds. That being said there are still some supreme grifters making tons of money owning land on which they do not grow alfalfa. Land prices are pretty dogshit right now too, so they can't walk away without getting screwed either.

ElGroucho posted:Farmers are funny as hell, because they always play the victim card. I cant speak for food crop farmers inCalifornia, but midwest grain farming is basically a part time job done by a small group. It takes a couple of weeks to plant 1k acres, then you shoot the poo poo at the co-op with the other folks who do Jack poo poo for 9 months out of the year until it is time to harvest then you work for another couple weeks. There is a ton of hurry up and wait in the industry. If anyone is interested in midwest corn growing trends since the Reagan era, the University of Illinois has a study for you to enjoy! Something like 92% of land in Iowa is in row crop production. Basically if it isnt under water or under a home or building, corn or beans is grown on it. So, goon reading this, what percentage of Iowans do you think make their primary income through farming? Go on. Guess. The answer? Seriously, it is two percent. As in 98% less than 100% Obviously they are outsized economically in Iowa and lots of tiny towns, including the one my folks and brother live in, are there only because of ag. weird segue, but if you are an agorophobe who works remotely and is interested in having an outsized political voice (sup, fellow cspammers) move to rural iowa. My brother is deadass broke, so I'm selling him my 3 br 2 ba home with a fireplace on contract (monthly payments to me and he'll own it, deed in hand, for like $18,000 in five years. My property taxes when I lived there were like $250/year. It is the same way I bought the place when I was deadass broke. Just browse craigslist real estate for "sell on contract." Now I'm paying $1,900/month for a rental like a rube because my wife "loves and misses her immediate family" so we moved back to new england. anyhoo, that's already too long and i always go long in this thread when ag comes up

It gets fed to other animals (including your dog and cat food) or as others said turned into corn syrup.

There was an old writing from 100 or 200 years ago that the diet of the South was corn and pork, but the pigs were fed with corn so the diet was basically just corn in different forms anyway.

pseudanonymous posted:Dont we make gasoline out of it? So that we can continue a lifestyle of using inefficient single transport that enriches some companies? yeah, the renewable fuel standard law turns a lot of corn into ethyl alcohol. not for good poo poo like whiskey, but to keep grain prices higher for grassley's iowa constituents to the chagrin of lawmakers from oil states like the zodiak killer who campaigned in Iowa against the RFS. A ton of it goes into animal feed here and abroad. NAFTA basically imploded Mexico's grain industry because mechanized factory farms made American grain cheaper than homegrown. The corn grown in the midwest isnt eaten by people. It is eaten by the stuff that people eat like pigs and cows. Because Iowa grows a shitton of corn and the state legislature will turn every iowan into a toxic avenger before they say no to ag interests, something like 50 million pigs are raised in the state yearly. It smells like actual, literal poo poo in a lot of places, though is much better than 25 years ago. Pigs produce 11 pounds (about 5kg for our non american friends) of poo poo everyday. For comparison, if every pig in Iowa disappeared today, but the state really, really wanted to keep up with feces production, Iowa would need to have a population of over 140 million people. Lmao my former state is basically a crime against nature. Why do they get to go first?

It isnt a thing that's done anymore but farmers used to put whole corncobs into a slatted open air bin to dry and they'd shell the corn and bring it to market once prices were higher. anyhoo, if you have a rodent phobia please stop reading Well, I did that one day. It was 1998 or so. With a drivers license soon in my future, I jumped at the opportunity to earn $15/hour or whatever. What you do is go into the slatted building and shovel corncobs onto a conveyer belt. However, you MUST tuck your jeans into your boots because you're not just shoveling corn, you're also disturbing hundreds of rats who are holed up there in a never ending buffet and a place that's warmer than outside. I will never forget the sea of rodents that hauled rear end over my feet and up my but not my pant leg once we started shoveling. it was unforgettable, as was the joy on the rottweiler named zima (1998, after all) catching the fleeing rats in his mouth to chomp, shake, and toss until he could maul his next victim. He claimed somewhere close to 20 rat carcasses that day. Not too shabby since they were hauling rear end out of the corn crib as fast as they could. Farm life, folks

Don't read this right before dinner. The most striking thing about it is that it's perfectly legal for these huge pig farms to spray liquid pig poo poo into the air until it atomizes and drifts over the countryside as a cloud of poisonous gas. You apparently have no legal recourse if your home is so awash in pig poo poo gas that it regularly knocks you unconscious and your home permanently reeks of pig poo poo.
