Byzantine posted:Ethiopian diplomats visited Italy in the 1400s for a church council and were treated as dignitaries and honored. One of Portia's suitors in A Merchant of Venice is the Prince of Morocco who woos her eloquently, fails her challenge, and graciously accepts his loss. In The Tempest, the party is traveling back from North Africa, where King Alonso of Naples has just married off his daughter Claribel to the King of Tunis, and Alonso is wistful because his daughter is now far away from him. Othello is a respected general in the Venetian army. And on and on.

the problem people in this thread have is that they’re all ideological and view voters as sorted by ideology as well. and that is just not true. most people, even politically engaged people, are wholly non-ideological and basically view politics as a cultural practice. it signifies what culture you belong to, and for some it’s like a team sport, but it’s not driven by any kind of coherent ideology, as in a view of what governance should look like. a lot of rurals support programs like right to repair or Medicare for all or whatever but they won’t vote for politicians who support them because they’ve internalized the message of the last forty years, which is Government Can Never Help You So Why Even Try. at this point I think it’s unbreakable and they’re lost to us. that’s the actual victory of the republicans and it’s a huge obstacle to change, you have to demonstrate to these people that policy can actually change their lives for the better, and they will never ever believe you. some won’t even believe you after you’ve done it. and I’m not just talking about depressed rurals. plenty of bright and ostensibly liberal urban democrats think this way too. they’re like beaten dogs. I have friends who love bootyman and beto, but they can’t point to anything they’ve actually done or will do. for them politics is about making them feel a certain way. it’s not about how their lives will be materially different based on who wins.

Eh just look at Virginia's ghoulish chief dem. The dems being anemic where they are is because they are extremely good at suppressing the left in those areas. The ridiculous Florida dems as well. I'm not an electoral expert but I think our right-Democrat Death Star in VA is the envy of any party apparatus besides New York. Northam is scum, and I am definitely not bitter about the "Not voting for the Democratic candidate is racist" rhetoric I had to put up with during that election season.

In a competitive market with thin margins upper management will never approve something that the competition isn't also forced to do. It's a dumb model and I routinely try to point this out, but it's like punching a stone. I got a talking to just the other day for refusing to punish an employee that took too many (unpaid) sick days he had take 3 YTD and I had to argue that this was a reasonable number . The reality is capitalism is garbage to workers and strong unions and good labour protection laws are the only way to force the higher ups to do things like offer paid sick days. There's several layers between me and the ceo and I could honestly be one level below him and I still wouldn't be able to make the decision to pay sick days. The second the ceo found out we were doing more than we're legally mandated to, the axe would fall and the sick days would be taken away. It's capitalism and it's a poo poo sandwich; no amount of additional profit will motivate them to see their employees as human. Collective bargaining or regulation are the only ways they'll ever get sick pay. The point of my anecdote is that some of these guys shot themselves in the dick and are blaming others for their own stupidity when it's painfully obvious why they no longer have paid sick days or bereavement leave.

I got a talking to just the other day for refusing to punish an employee that took too many (unpaid) sick days he had take 3 YTD and I had to argue that this was a reasonable number . Anecdotally, I still hear the familiar refrain that "nobody wants to work anymore" uttered a lot in my workplace, which is full of Trumpies. A certain segment of Republican voters seem to take pride in having to work Saturdays, constantly stay late on short notice and coming into work even if they're sick or have a family crisis. I don't know where Republicans in general get the idea that Americans are loving lazy when every metric you can use to measure it clearly states the exact opposite. But their solution to every loving thing is "work harder", "spend less", "prey a lot" and "don't get sick" then these same people never stop bitching about taxes.
