Just about finished with my full watch of the Next Generation. Season 7 is painful to get through but I am over half way done. Last night the wife and I watched the episode where Picard hates one of the ensigns and send her to her death in Cardassian space to help a traitor get back to his home world for some reason that makes zero sense. Probably the most painful episode to get through so far this season was Dr. Crusher having sex with a ghost.

Why don't you perform zazen, facing a wall?
That’s one of the few gems of season 7 imo. Its view of life among the junior officers is a really good one that provides a whole new perspective on the usual main characters — Riker the unapproachable boss, Worf the gold-hearted mentor, Picard the terrifyingly harsh commander. He’s harsh with the ensign because she’s one of the ones in Wesley’s coverup from “The First Duty”. I think it’s wrong to say that he hates her, but the disastrous end to which her mission comes does kind of make it seem like he manipulated her into volunteering for suicide. Because it’s a syndicated show we don’t really get to see what the fallout was on Picard, but he’s obviously affected by what his orders have led to, and some strikingly similar motifs (young female Bajoran officer goes on a secret mission at Picard’s behest, things end badly) will be revisited later in the season in what feels like a spiritual follow-up to this one.

How??? The plot makes no sense. I know the bar for quality Star Trek lowered dramatically starting with Voyager, but I don't see how that episode could be a top 10 best episode. It's so emotionally manipulative to the audience. The plot makes no sense, and having throw away characters you don't see ever again means there's zero investment.

ashpanash

I can see when you are lying.

It was the shift in perspective that was nice. It felt like something new, a view from below instead of being a fly on the wall. It wasn’t so much about the story itself but rather the unique presentation.

These days, when even mediocre shows do interesting things all the time, it can seem kind of old hat, I guess. But it felt pretty fresh when it aired.

Sito Jaxa was in a previous episode, and Ogawa was in 13 previous episodes and shows up again later.

Also it's a great episode.

I just watched the DS9 episode with Worf's trial for firing on a decloaking Klingon ship while the Defiant is escorting some Cardassian supply ships. Apart from the fact that the storyline is horrifically bad (as trial episodes can be) the thing that most stood out to me was the characters talking directly to the camera. It made me want a Star Trek that features that. It might be old by now (the documentary as a frame for the fiction,) but a Star Trek where the viewer is addressed, and we get insights straight from Star Fleet members would be amazing.

I was watching TNG and perhaps this is a dumb person noticing incredibly overt cinematography that can be interpreted to have a good amount of symbolism... but I can't be the only one who thinks this scene is brilliant?

Something something daughter reflection of self, door to the left for one option/view, door to the right where seconds later another viewpoint is about to enter.

I've said it before but TNG is such an incredible comfortable series to watch and while I appreciated Discovery's...take and execution if not the actual writing it's not the same at all in terms of atmosphere. And yes, I have watched Orville but it doesn't quite capture the same feeling (it's still decent). Maybe it's practical/"realistic" but the engine/AC ambience in Orville for example is way quieter than on TNG where it is ever present on the Enterprise.

The shift in perspective is why it's so popular. There's 1,000 people on the ship and we never here anything from the other 985 of them.

Also the plot is painfully simple and I think you're missing half of it. It's very clearly laid out that the Cardassian is spying for the Federation, and he's doing so because he's ethically opposed to the current Cardassian leadership, and the Federation wants to get their spy back in place safely. The episode comes up pretty regularly and I've never heard of anyone who had trouble understanding the plot before.

I feel like there's got to be a great article - either already out there or waiting to be written - about the change in sound design over the past few decades. Sound effects today feel so different from sound effects of the past and I really want to know why. Is it that everything's just digital resamples now? Is it in response to trends in home viewing? Is it just the aggregate of the tastes of modern producers? What's the theory and terminology behind it?

This is indeed a pretty interesting device. The idea of an in-universe documentary episode worked well in B5.

I had thoughts about this. I would imagine the original show was at least originally mixed for your average TV set and nothing else *really* mattered. Today your audio source could be a tablet, some flat TV's lovely built-in speaker, soundbars, 2 large speakers, a full on surround set, or varying qualities of headphones. All in all has that really affected audio production in a certain way? I wouldn't count on it. I imagine some series aim for the lowest/mid/high denominators though. Would obviously have to find some interviews from some audio engineers who have been in the scene for a long while to get an informed answer.

I'm not a native speaker and I use closed captioning for my own comfort - often translated subtitles don't offer the accuracy I want. Honestly for TNG I would barely require it but the re-imagined Galactica series was purposely recorded in a way where CC was basically mandatory. Orville is also fairly clear in dialogue audio, but Game of Thrones sure as hell isn't and it's definitely partially because it's going for some sort of "gritty", occasionally action-filled soundscape.

Game of Thrones is the only show I've had to turn all the way up (then rapidly down as soon as action happened). I also had to wait for night to watch it, any attempts at viewing it before sundown was just a thousand reflections on a pitch-black screen with a ghost face.

Actually you said the plot made no sense to you, which is different from understanding the plot just fine. He had to have an excuse to cross the border and escorting a Bajoran prisoner as a bounty hunter was considered a good excuse. I'm not going to go over every single plot point and line of dialog that explains it as you bring up each one individually so I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

the episode was about focusing on people who live and work on the ship who aren't the main characters

That's why they're people who "will never be seen again". Who else would they use? We already know Guinan and Barclay very well, and besides Ogawa, they're the only characters well established. They had to use characters who were used significantly less and create new ones by design.

That uniform looked like a knockoff Halloween costume.

RE: sound effects, I feel like old school sound effects were more ballsy because they were part of selling the overall package of a sci fi special effect, which often times wasnt all that visually special especially on a Star Trek budget. Plus sound mixes are way more complicated and layered these days with multiple channels and such, and every sound in a big action sequence may be often competing with space in a more dense mix than it was in the 60s-80s.
