Let's take the Cutoff. It's July, no need to fear snowstorms or cannibals!

but what if the cannibal is inside us this whole time? who knows when it may strike? I say we stick to the California Trail for the time, the cutoff still loving sucks

The decision whether to take the Hastings Cutoff was...disconcertingly close. Guess they weren't important! This ford is so easy I won't even give it the dignity of choice. Another trading post in the wilderness. This trading post would eventually evolve into the city of Winnemucca, NV. Here's all of the food we have left. Do we buy anything?

How about some more Bacon, Coffee, and Dried Bread. That all should make for a good eating.

Buy all the food, I feel like the next set of strangers might be a bit hungrier than the last.

Buy wagon spares if there are any.

Looks like we could use more coffee and cornmeal. And wagon bits if they have any that we don't have, I think we've used our spare tongue. If I'm remembering correctly about ropes and chains being finite we should grab some more of those too if possible, unless this place just has food.

Edible plants are going to be few and far between form here on out, better get whatever vegetables they have.

Using our substantial coffers, we buy all the food and whiskey they have. Unfortunately the trading post has no wagon parts or clocks. The Applegate Trail was used as a way to get to Oregon, so we'll skip it here. At this point we do get the option to gather hay in certain areas to feed our oxen. So far it's smooth sailing... The path splits here. Both routes start with desert, have a brief interlude with fresh water and greenery, and end with a hard climb through forested mountains.

My vague (probably wrong) understanding of California geography is that Truckee is near the Sierra Nevada mountains. Gold ahoy!!!

Maybe Truckee wasn't the best choice. Within 3 miles we hit quicksand!

My guess is, if it walks into the quicksand, gets stuck and dies, at least you didn't lose a healthy oxen. In other words, it's a canary.

Can't be any harm in waiting for it to improve. Quicksand improves, right?

Pfft, slow down, like giving the quicksand more time to suck us in is the way to go. Full speed ahead!

Three miles? Where’s the option to turn around and take the other path? That seems more logical. Regardless, this isn’t about logic. Continue ahead.

Predictably, continuing at full speed through quicksand exhausts our animals before we can even make it a mile.
