Having been a benefactor of SNAP one time in my life, it bothers me to hear people say poo poo like that. Why do so many have that mentality?

one reason is that, if people who work hard can still end up on snap, then it could mean that if you got fired / missed a paycheck / etc you might suddenly find yourself dependent on the assistance of others. the very assistance you want to deny them! so it can't be the case that people using food assistance work hard, because you work hard, and almost nothing is more important than being in their position. bad things can't happen to good people, and you're a good person.

Because they have never been on food stamps and honestly believe that it's just an easy free lunch and anyone can just stroll in and pick up some stamps. It's easy to think this way when you have never been through it yourself and your own experiences and peers reinforce this simple easy outlook.

it's also because they believe all black people are on foods stamps and no white people are and so 9 times out of 10 it's just a super racist dogwhistle

Trump, for example, believes that not only are only black people recipients of social programs, but ALL of them are, and more pudding brained olds than not agree with him

yeah, hard work sure doesn't equate to good paying work.

a buddy of mine, who worked seasonally spreading hog poo poo on topsoil, was having a beer with me at the bar bemoaning people on government programs HE AND HIS KIDS were on as being unworthy, lazy layabouts. I dont know of he's off those programs 7 years later, tbh. i havent seen much of him since.

the only moral abortions and safety net programs are my abortions and safety net programs that I use.

and no, I'm not being facetious, the man spread liquid poo poo for a living. it was a sprint because it only (should) be spread during a window where the soil is cool enough but not frozen and the crops are out of the ground

it's the reason they will reflexively defend any social spending that either they benefit from like mortgage deductions, or that benefit people within their umbrella of acceptable identity like farm crop insurance, and will generally support tax cuts no matter what

What pisses me off the most here is the kindergarten understanding of the job market as this nebulous force dispensing work for anybody willing to do whatever. Having never grown out of expecting to get paid for chores, boomers would love to live in the Soviet Union

A personal favorite is a guy from my hometown (southern Arkansas, pop ~1,200) who loves to go on about how people that receive food stamps should be drug tested, despite his family being some of the most well-to-do people in the area because they own the single grocery store within a 20mi radius.

Not quite the same but my kind of lovely sister even turned on family.

My oldest sister was basically screwed out of her HR job because her boss didn't like her. Her boss asked for a meeting and just insulted and picked at her. She didn't take the bait and say anything fireable, but she walked out of the room saying "If there's nothing else, then I'm done." Her boss walked up to her the next day and asked when she was leaving, and after my sister clarified that she wasn't quitting they proceeded to say that nope, you totally verbally quit and have to leave. She got hosed out of severance and had to appeal to get her unemployment. We're pretty sure we can trust her version since the company didn't bother to send anyone to contest the appeal, even though they do for most cases. She's admittedly taking the job search a little slowly now (after being desperate and struggling for 2 months) since she wants to find a job that's less miserable than the last one, and she can pretty much get by on unemployment for now.

lovely sister knows all of this and still won't shut up about how if you quit you shouldn't get unemployment, how she'd never stay on unemployment and never need it, that she'd just get a job at Kohl's because it's the right thing to do, etc. lovely sister was effectively handed a dream work-from-home job because she knew the right guy, and between her and her husband they make over $100K a year. She's in her 40s but acts like a boomer so much that even my mother makes fun of her for being an old woman. She also won't stop complaining about how sad it is that she doesn't have a better relationship with me or my sister. Aside from stuff like this, we also don't love it when she talks about solving the opioid crisis by just letting who overdoses die at Thanksgiving. Weird thing is that she's like 95% chud, but hates Trump. Already talking about how the Democrats are going too far left though so who knows how long that will last .

In Indiana if you have any sort of drug conviction of any kind in your past, you are under current law, permanetly barred from food stamps and some other assistance programs.

So say your someone who has managed to clean themselves up and get their life back going on track, you are also barred from one very potentially life saving assistance program that could definitely help keep you on track.

Yup. She offers some interesting insight into the "Panera Bread" demographic. My nieces both have trust funds for college from a relative who passed away. The fund manager it was started with seemed good. Decent returns with a mixed portfolio and really detailed reports. During one big family visit, she starts freaking out because she found out that they had to cover about $3,000 in taxes for the fund and that was almost the whole year's gains. My dad and I checked and explained that they'd sold a really profitable position and it was just the capital gains tax on 3 years of profit. And also that she could just email them and get a check from the fund to cover the taxes, it was an allowed expense.

But nope. It was a catastrophe (somehow) and they could never let it happen again, so they moved the money to a restricted education only fund that barely keeps up with inflation. But they love it so much because now there are no taxes to pay. I'm not kidding, they have literally said that. And the fund has a penalty fee if for any money spent on non-education expenses, but it's cool the adviser explained how they could easily commit minor tax fraud to get around that.

That's the entire plan for America.

Prisons make lots of money for very rich people, so more people in prison is good. Therefore anything that reduces the likelihood for people to commit crimes - or anything that reduces recidivism - like welfare, free/cheap education and better wages is bad.

At the gov't tax office. A fat, balding man in a white shirt and tie is on the phone with a superior. "Yes, sir. No no sir, it's fine. Thank you sir." He hangs up with a sigh and looks grimly at his co-workers, who are standing around him and nervously watching him. "I'm sorry, guys" he says, dejectedly, "we're not going to be able to afford gay abortions this year. "What... what about islamic communism?" a scantily clad young woman asks in a shocked voice. "What about antifa death squads?" "I'm sorry, Rebecca. Looks like a gang of RENEGADE SHOPPERS were able to seize on a great deal and avoid paying the grueling taxes that we force on them for every purchase. We'll have to cancel all of that this year, PLUS we're gonna have to cancel our marijuana party, PLUS we're gonna have to start saying merry christmas again. Alright, everybody get back to work. Don't you tell me my business again.
Has anyone ever crunched the numbers for UHC in a way that compares what people pay in premiums and deductibles now vs. what they'd pay in taxes under a national system? Genuinely curious.

Also, I never quite understood why corporations and business would be so adamantly against single payer or a public option. Wouldn't that free them the cost of providing group plans? Or do they just enjoy lording lovely coverage over wage slaves as part of compensation?
