This is a hideous tragedy but also lol that the big tough cop has to use his gun to protect himself from a medium size dog and fails spectacularly plus murders someone at the same time.

Also the sheer level of disdain he has for the woman's safety and wellbeing is quite impressive

I think we could be careful about posting all of the funny stuff about Bojo. All this stuff, negative or positive, is just putting all the attention on him. It's like Big Brother: you stay in the house because you're stirring such poo poo that people want to keep watching. It's the boring guy who does nothing and never gets air time that gets voted out.

He just strikes me as someone who's benefiting from any publicity, good or bad, and what's really needed is just to turn every discussion about Bojo into a discussion about policies as quickly as possible. Maybe not here, because we're all jew hating communists here already, but in general.

One very privileged man is irrelevant. What's relevant is the thousands of ordinary people who will suffer as a result of a hard border with the EU. That's why I back Labour's policy of opposing No Deal or a bad Tory Deal at any opportunity.

yeah I was gonna say something about how sexualisation only happens to women and not their male peers, but that's not actually true - it's just that with men it usually takes the form of calling them gay. Which I guess makes sense in the gender roles hierarchy - women get reminded of their place, men get accused of failing to meet the standard and become a target for punishment

I guess it's just down to how you mock them, maybe sometimes there's no way to make it humorous without people assuming you're saying "the hypocrisy of this guy when he is also gay which makes him just as bad"
I think the stereotype that it builds that "homophobes secretly gay" is double edged in that some people will read it as "and that's terrible/laughable because being gay is bad/funny" but on the other hand it makes people less comfortable subscribing to openly homophobic views in public.

There's a lot of power dynamics that have to be taken into account as to whether it's appropriate; it obviously wouldn't be fair to mock young people forced to apologize in front of their congregation for 'moral failings' because they're at the receiving end of an abusive dynamic. But once you've reached the level of being a political or religious figure you should be turning around and calling out homophobia whether you're gay or bi or straight or whatever. If Desmond Tutu can travel to loving Uganda to argue for LGBT rights and then apologize to gay people everywhere upon failing, then some white bread Indiana preacher can do same before getting caught cruising.

Thinking about it, that's probably the best guide to what type of mockery it is; where the emphasis lies.
Good: He spent 15 years calling for the reintroduction of Sodomy Laws, and then they caught him in a motel with two guys.

From what I've heard American cops are not trained in any kind of deescalation process. Add to this that they are trained to be terrified of an attack at any moment and you get extremely trigger happy police.

As well as the fact that they think they've above the average citizen so who cares if they just shoot their dog. Lucky they don't shoot them... oh wait.

There was another one in New Jersey this week where the cop successfully shot the dog to death instead of a human bystander, and in the video he literally yells ‘GET BACK!’ at the dog and then unloads a clip into it when It doesn’t comply with his orders.

Cops both in and out of America generally think deescalation and stuff is for pussies who want to get cops killed. When they introduced training for it in some big city (Portland maybe?) a whole mess of cops just outright resigned rather. I mean, good riddance obviously, but it's loving wild that "Let's try and make you a better cop who faces less danger and gets better results" is met with such hostility.

Honestly I'm shocked far more yank cops don't get killed, not because of getting deliberately targeted but because they go in so hard that half the time you wonder other people didn't assume they were under attack by some random psycho rather than a police officer (But I repeat myself :v:) and draw their own piece to retaliate. Or just people getting so raging they do something about it, if someone shot one of my pets I wouldn't be surprised if I reacted... poorly.

Apparently one of the reasons that SWAT started actually checking the paperwork a bit more compared to the 2000s is because there were a couple of incidents where they no knock raided the wrong address and got shot.

They almost always killed the homeowners during the firefights in those cases though, but it was the shooting back and judges starting to say "they were right to shoot back, you no knock raided the wrong people" that made them review methods.

No definitely ask! And this is generally a good thread for people explaining stuff, they'll usually try their best :3:

I mean I got a bit wordy but the basics of this stuff aren't hard, it's just that there's some useful language to fall back on. Like "objectification" means treating someone not as a person, but like an object to be used (the passive target of an action if you know yr grammar) - so typically when people talk about objectifying women it's about basically reducing them to something to be leered at, focusing on their sexuality or attractiveness instead of their character or skills, that kind of thing

There can be a bunch of academic language too (especially with "newer" theory around gender - partly out of necessity because our language is pretty limited for some of these concepts) but you don't need to know it - the ideas aren't that complicated, the hard part is incorporating it into your understanding of the world, y'know? Suddenly you have a lot more to think about, things become more complicated, you have habits to fall out of, all that stuff. If an explanation you're reading doesn't click with you, you just need to find one that does (this goes for anything) - and talking to people and asking questions can help a lot, because you can find a way to get those ideas across. Nobody owes you an explanation, but a lot of people will be happy to talk about it if you're cool!

What I find about a lot of people is that they discriminate based on the area they're in. Like if I was back in Leicester people would react differently on St. Matthews than they would in Markfield. This doesn't just make cops trigger happy, it makes people want to carry knives. It's like the message "your area is poo poo" becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, and that's before you get into poverty, austerity and social deprivation.

And we all do it. I think all of us here could name the nearest "poo poo area" in the place they live, because we talk about it a lot.

I guess when you can't really display emphasis word order is a good way to direct the reader to the bit that you're mocking.

Or the pithy way is to just leave out any reference to the sexuality bit in the reply if you're tweeting, like reply to "Arkansas pastor caught soliciting gay sex" from a news station with "lol, that's the rear end in a top hat who kept calling for the Sodomy Bill" rather than even acknowledge the, hem, thrust of the article being the cruising.
