I've been reading a lot less than I'd like since I started walking so much but I just got the Sherlock Holmes audio book read by history's greatest monster and it's pretty good didn't even have to give Jeff bezos any money (it's like £70 but you can get it with a free trial??) turns out Holmes is an extremely coked up racist, who knew e: 32 is the number of counties there'll be in the free state by this time next year XMNN fucked around with this message at 00:22 on Aug 4, 2019 |

Holmes is how Tories see themselves. Moriarty is how the rest of the world sees them. Lestrade is how Corbyn sees them.

Best takedown of Sherlock Holmes I read was from Terry Pratchett's Vimes. Saying that logical deductions don't mean poo poo, a Lord painting his rooms or gardening can be deduced to be a poor rear end hobo from his looks.

So y'all are talking about dry socialist texts, and have previously been talking about podcasts. I've been talking about a creating a youtube channel of my own for a while where I read leftist books and break them down into poo poo people can understand. I've signed up a youtube and patreon account and everything. Haven't actually made any content yet, but still think I might get to it eventually.

Whatevil, I think that would be pretty valuable. A lot of the best socialist texts are either written in 1900s 'god I love subclauses' english, or Ronya-level academic impenetrability.

Early Agatha Christie novels written in the 1920s also have a casual acceptance of white British superiority evident in the dialogue and some dialogue that is unacceptable these days (especially around descriptions of Jewish people and use of the word 'dago' which also crops up quite frequently.). The depiction of the pygmy in the first story should be a huge red flag in terms of Conan Doyle's racism. I mean probably not as bad as the average person of his time but still objectively bad.

The best Holmes imo is in Elementary, because; A) He has extremely good observation but they tend to be plausible becasue they're the most likely explanation for something, not just "This bloke's got a hat on, therefore he's the Boston Strangler" but more like "Only two models of car have both this tire track and use the oil formulation that has leaked here so that's what we're looking for". B) The bulk of what they do is actually sifting through mountains of evidence looking for clues, links, and connections, and pretty much every episode has at least one scene (And typically a breakthrough) there they've got boxes and boxes of documents to go through. C) Watson becomes very capable as well over the course of the series, and like Holmes, it's shown that this happens because she works incredibly hard at it. Holmes has gifts that make it easier for him but he's also constantly talking about books he read something in, or folios he's studies, or the like. Meanwhile a couple of other characters slowly improve as well, thanks to spending time with them and learning some tricks and insights, but because they don't study intensely they never get to Holmes and Watson's level. D) The fact that he's a drug addict is a central part of the show and it's shown over and over that actually, being a smackhead is pretty atrocious for his work. He attends meetings. He tries weird gimmicks because he thinks he's too clever for meetings, and gets told off and proven wrong. I've heard it's praised for being a fairly realistic depitction of recovering from addiction, which I couldn't comment on myself, but it passes the smell test at least. E) I forgot E but I definitely had one Point is show is on CBS and yeah it's pro-cop shite but aside from that it's actually really good Ms Adequate fucked around with this message at 06:01 on Aug 4, 2019 |

Ms Adequate posted:The best Holmes imo is in Elementary I completely agree with all of this. Elementary is easily my most favourite rendition of Sherlock Holmes and it is all due to the way they approach the legend in all the ways you have said. I also love that Holmes grows and changes over the course of the show in a very believable way. And that Moriarty is not the be end and all of every criminal like other adaptations. Not to mention Johnny Lee Miller is an absolute fish and truly fantastic actor and Lucy Lu is a sensational Watson with her own striking character development. 😁 Goodness I am such a fan and halfway through season 5. Not long to go before I manage to finish it all off!

I'm very intimidated when I start to poke into something that turns out to require a lot of knowledge not to mess up, because I don't read an awful lot of books and I guess it's starting to show. Even socialism scares me because I know that it won't be long before people are pulling out names I won't even try to read. Congrats Azza, this already puts you way ahead of most other dipshits. Every time it gives me flashbacks to the classroom scene of starship troopers, but with my imagination adding in a big flashing sign saying THIS IS WHAT POLICE ACTUALLY BELIEVE
