I had to pop out this morning and had Radio 4 on in the car. Will Self was bloviating on in his Point of View about the fact that as a 'society' we've essentially decided that culture has a market value, and that if it has no market value, it isn't culture. He tied this to neoliberal policies and had a few digs at poor people (because it's Will Self), but I thought it was mildly interesting for 8:50 on a Sunday morning.

Graffiti is culture, and slang and resistance. A weed is a cultivar which has been selected for by the arduous task of surviving when so many want it dead. A rose will sell for a great price, but a dandelion is just as cultured and honed.

I understand this derives from people arguing in bad faith but how in the hell do you change people's minds like that? You're just going to get people who are already primed to do the legwork while the racists are all too happy to dump Muslim rape statistics or whatever on people who have no opinion one way or the other. Are we really moving towards a future of "preach to the choir and shoot anyone who does not accept what we say on faith" on all sides?

It would appear the second one there is the Grover mezzanine bathroom design. The inset where the bathtub is actually overhangs the building on the outside so you just pull the plug out of the tub when you're done and the water gushes onto the ground outside. Really saves money on waste pipes

Speaking of, I have around 50 or so spiders living on my back wall and window, with most of it covered in webs and eggs. I've never seen spiders live so close to one another as thought they were quite territorial, but this group seem to work together and have caught hundreds of flies. I've watched them and they seem to respect each others space and not steal food or anything, it's quite strange really. Spider communism.

"Cultural Renewal", plus the Remembrance Day bank holiday to me just sounds like "we're going to elevate the WW2 nostalgia to even more absurd heights". - We're going to build a Colossus of Rhodes style statue of Winston Churchill and stick it over the Thames. - Wearing a poppy every single day of the year will be compulsory. - Vera Lynn will be placed permanently at #1 in the charts.

Vaguely related to Tory student chat: when I were a lass extremely many moons ago (500+), they always had these documentaries on TV about students applying to uni (back in the glory days of grants where students were encouraged to live away from home) and without fail there was always a scene with a selection panel interviewing that rare item, a Tory supporter school student. The comments from selection panels were always along the lines of how thoughtful and mature such a student was compared to those of us going on Anti-apartheid and Rock Against Racism demos. (So much for academia being a hot bed of radicalism) and these students always got offered places with lower grade offers than others.

I think most web making spiders cant see that distant, so cant see another nearby. When they get close they may get into fighting. Maybe why they use their legs to feel the web vibrations and not seeing them on it. Now wolf spiders would love this wall buffet if they find it on their roaming about. As a kid at my grandmothers detached house, one wall would be full of butterfly cocoons. Absolutely beautiful. Now alas none as they are rare as poo poo.
